Quote:I agree with Cowlishaw that the Big12 is the right size and has the right idea about a championship game. Look how many years the SWC went with a round robin schedule and no championship game. There were a few ties for the title, but generally it was pretty well agreed who the champion was. It was just bad luck this year for the Big12 that one of the teams did not make the playoff. Things happen. What do you think? Do you agree with your writing partner?
What hurt the Big 12 most was the non-conference schedule of Baylor, the fact that Baylor beat TCU and Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech all had disappointing seasons. Mississippi State played an awful non-conference schedule, and four games to boot. But it plays in the SEC, and that makes up for it. If the traditional Big 12 powers had been closer to what we usually expect, it would have helped Baylor and TCU. Of course, they might have also lost those games. At any rate, a conference title game often hurts more than it helps. Look at K-State in 1998. Ranked No. 2 in the country and loses to Texas A&M in the Big 12 championship game and gets knocked out of the BCS title game. I don't think expansion, to get the Big 12 up to the required 12 teams for a title game, is the answer, either. Who do you want to add? Not any great candidates.
Quote:Should the Big 12 expand? And which teams would you target?
Don't think so. The candidates are the likes of Cincinnati -- which reportedly had been contacted even before this season -- BYU, New Mexico, Boise State, UConn, Houston. None of those teams moves the needle much. The rest of the league isn't inclined to do it, either. As is with TV contracts, they're dividing up $23 million a year. They're not much for giving that away.
I think this pretty much ends the talk of the Big 12 expanding. Big 12 conference Presidents and ADs are not going vote for a school that takes money away from their school.

The Big XII will die on the vine, regardless of what they do. They are turning into another SWC. Never had any vision other than the Longhorn vision. I am amazed that the Sooners put up with it...

The SWC never had the clout or money the Big 12 makes. The SWC was dead because it became a Texas centered conference. In business---- you don't normally give money to the homeless. Why should the Big 12 expand to help the homeless? At the end of the day--- the Big 12 conference is in business to make money.
OU tried to leave and they were told NO. OU along with OSU know they are tied with Texas & Texas Tech. Those 4 are a package deal.

Your conference depends on two teams: Texas and Oklahoma. Once these two teams leave, you are g5 and homeless. No conference will take your low academics and pitiful football and basketball history.

If the Big12 was in the Money making business. Then they would have worked together to build a television network. How much money is not coming to the conference just because they have no network or championship game.

The resident A&m fan who Hates Texas won't admit that Texas tried to get A&M to make the LHN a joint network

The 4 of us are tied together and we view it as a partnership. All 4 of us benefit the other in different ways. I want to beat all 3 on the field but I respect all 3 as well.

Yup. I'll also add that the Big 12 doesn't have enough of a footprint (eyeballs) or content for a television network. They know it wouldn't be successful if they don't expand the conference. I think Big 12 expansion and having a conference network are directly related. It will be interesting to see whether they're proactive or allow themselves to become the Big East 2.0.

As Pony stated---- UT tried to get A&M to start a "Lonestar? network and former A&M AD Bill Byrne wanted no part of it.
Our schools make the same as PAC, SEC, ACC and Big 10 schools make. Besides---- we are a Texas based conference. If we had a conference network--- who would watch it?

How exactly would you see it? Last time I checked, Texas Tech and Oklahoma St are still valued members of the Big 12

Then enlighten all of us and explain who they are tied to? SMU, Houston?
Great schools in fertile rich recruiting grounds and our 2 largest cities don't have P5 schools

I think all of us are laughing as we cash checks generated by our support across the state of Texas.
Why the hatred? SMU hired a very well liked HC and will soon be returning to bowl games. Houston has the same chance as well with their soon to be named HC
