I will say that they would probably still be funny ""in the light of day" if uttered "by the correct person(s). It's just that this guy "isn't the right person".

Now he has to deal with a sh!t storm coming from the PC Police. However, if he's sufficiently liberal, he'll get let off the hook by the media with this apology. If he were a known conservative - they wouldn't let up until he lost his job. That is how the PC crowd and media get to choose who gets crucified and who gets a slap on the wrist.
