The Grass isn't Always Greener
Was told tonight #Michigan officials offered David Cutcliffe their job but the #Duke coach turned it down. Times sure have changed.

Sounds like Duke's coach just turned down the Michigan gig. Wow.

Michigan must be getting desperate if they offered Cutcliffe.

Why would it be a sign of desperation to offer Cutcliffe the job?

Grobe turned down Neb. to stay at Wake.

He now regrets it.

I hope Duke supports Cutcliff with more than promises.

Have to agree. Why jump into a pressure cooker when you can continue to build a program under less stress. Cutcliffe is not a spring chicken and heading to the frozen rust belt certainly wouldn't be appealing. Obviously, Duke is doing something right.

Cutcliffe is trying to build Duke into the Stanford of the East. The recruiting has improved and they are now spending money on improving the facilities.

Also, I think Cut has a really big chip on his shoulder from not getting the Tennessee job. I think he wants to prove that he can not only build a program but sustain it as well. After Fulmer was canned by Tennessee, look at where they are now. You have to wonder what could have been, if they would have chosen him instead of Kiffen.

Considering that they are funding the sport now I'd say he has support.

The report that Michigan offered the job may be false. The Durham Morning Herald Duke beat reporter says that Duke is denying that Michigan contacted Cutcliffe or the Duke AD. The same is being reported elsewhere.

RE: Report: Duke's David Cutcliffe turned down U-M job
Why would anyone want the Michigan job? You have to win 10+ games there to make anyone happy, and even then you'll be ridiculed. Lloyd Carr averaged 9+ wins per season and that wasn't good enough, he was "forced" to retire.

If the reports are true that Cutcliffe turned down the job, then I applaud him. Excellent decision.

Cutcliffe is an excellent coach but he's not a big name and he's 60. He's gotta be pretty far down on a list that includes Jim Harbaugh, Les Miles, and David Shaw.

David Shaw would be an horrific hire.

Carr was 1-6 against Ohio State his final 7 years. That's why he was fired. He was also 2-5 in his last 7 bowls. He only won 10+ games once during his final four years. Looking back, his firing may have been questionable, but given the circumstances, wasn't unwarranted.

They should have never fired Rodriguez, though. But that was a bad relationship from the start apparently. Hoke was quite simply not a good coach, and his record got worse every year during his four years there. That was a very reasonable firing. And frankly, it was surprising they didn't fire him sooner.

Rich Rod could have turned it around with another Year and some culture change from fans.

Reports that someone turned down a coaching job are more often false than true. If an AD says to a potential candidate (or his agent) "If we were to offer you the job, would you be interested?", the press and/or rumor mill is likely to report that as turning down an offer. It isn't. It's just part of the courtship dance to find out if further conversation is warranted.

Coach Cutcliffe is in a great spot. He's the Billy Donovan of The ACC. He's at a program where he doesn't have to be highly successful to be a appreciated yet he manages to be both successful and appreciated. Why leave that?
