I would have expected UConn to be lower and Memphis to be higher considering their records. Good job huskies.

It would be good to understand the network that these games were on. Obviously, an ESPN/ESPN2 compilation of games would skew the numbers vs. ESPNU/ESPN News. Also, was ESPN 3 part of this?

Knowledge is power when looking at reports like this.

If UConn was 8-4, we'd be up at (or near) Boise & BYU.

But eight wins seems pretty far away.

Right. Also, while Memphis (the metro area) is ESPN's #3 ranked market, clearly most of those eyes are watching P5 matchups. Those get prime times and locations.

Frank the Tank wrote a good article on the potential of the Memphis football market ->

http://frankthetank.me/2014/12/08/colleg...d-memphis/

...I’ve also always acknowledged that any school with a great basketball fan base (i.e. UConn, Memphis, San Diego State, New Mexico, etc.) could do wonders for its conference realignment prospects if it could merely be competent in football. (I’d also say the same thing about quality academic schools in attractive locations, as well – see how much Tulane and Rice could be worth if they could string a few winning seasons together.) Memphis with a solid football program can certainly be a financially viable addition and it’s in a recruiting rich area for both football and basketball players. While its market is in SEC territory, it’s a split area for football (mainly between Tennessee and Ole Miss), has shown to be unified for Memphis basketball, and it’s a region that isn’t oversaturated with power school competition (much like Cincinnati where it’s a great recruiting region with “only” Ohio State as an in-state competitor and it’s located on the outer geographic band of the flagship’s sphere of influence). In contrast, the states of Texas, Florida and North Carolina are overloaded with power conference schools already...

Great point. Are they counting cbs sports network in this well? I don't remember some of these teams ever playing on espn at all....Wyoming and Texas st are the two I don't remember seeing

So the Memphis market has "potential" yet barely anyone was watching during their best year in ages?

Memphis played TU x 3 on ESPNU. The rest were CBSSN, NEWS and ESPN3 games. Maybe they'll get more games on rateable channels next year.

Look at the Memphis Grizzlies. They were horrible and drew next to nobody to their games. There was talk of the team moving it was so bad. Then they started putting a good product on the court and now they're averaging in 16,000 plus a game. In short, one year of good football isn't going to repair a decade of bad football and decades of neglect. It'll take time and winning but, with the Memphis area market, there's no reason that consistently good Memphis football won't take off a la Grizzlies and Tiger basketball.

If you can have good ratings on cbs sports net, espn news, and espnu then that says a lot

You may be right, but the Grizzlies have basically zero competition. The next closest NBA team is in Atlanta so any basketball fan within 200 miles of Memphis will follow the Grizzlies if they're good.

Memphis football has like 9 SEC programs and a handful of other FBS teams to compete with in the same region so it's going to be tougher. What you have going for you is that your basketball program has established your brand as something the locals can be proud of, so it's not like you're coming out of nowhere.

Frank has posted here in the past. He loooooooves the B1G.

He says BYU and UConn are the two biggest catches available for the P5 conferences. But I think he says Cincinnati and BYU are the best options for the Big 12.

Pretty sure all but three of our games were on CBSSN and two that weren't were weekday games. Can't really do much with that kind of slate, especially given how few people actually have CBSSN.

Fresno and Boise are the surprises to me. That may be the correlation for pay. I think Boise gets 5 mill for 6 million viewers. We are getting just about half in viewers and dollars.

Just another thread by a fan of a program highlighting stats that make their program the "obvious choice" for P5 inclusion. Almost every program has fans that have done it and when they do, fans from the lower rated (in that stat) offer reasoning why they didn't do well only to be laughed at by those at the top of that stat.

Only the absence of more stats will end the cycle.
