When Saban leaves ...
Let's make sure his kids leave, too. That is all.

I think if Saban could talk, he would want to play UAB, just to have the chance to settle the score.

His daughters might make that happen. I don't see them being as much of a problem as PBJ, but you never know...

The UA administration has been a headache for UAB since 1969 and nothing has changed for the better since then. Back when I was a student in grad school (MA in Education in 1972), the UAB profs told of the battles the school had to fight to pry any kind of program from the Tuscaloosa campus -- particularly the higher tuition grad programs. They were anything but generous about releasing programs they wanted to keep for themselves.

Men's sports are just one example of that attitude toward UAB and UAH. That is why the BOT sent Portera to end hockey at UAH and now Watts to end football at UAB - each was the marquee sport for that campus.

I think Saban said it best. It's above his pay grade. He was being serious.

Football isn't exactly the "marquee" sport for UAB. I'd say that honor goes to Men's Basketball, which will of course ultimately be screwed too via conference change.

He is literally the highest paid public position in the state, but I see what you mean.

RE: When Saban leaves ...
I truly believe Nick Saban is one of the most powerful people in the state. In a way, he wields more power than the governor. Deep down, I believe he knows full well that having UAB on the schedule would be good. The potential for one of the most damaging upsets ever was there, but that was true with playing any of the smaller schools. The truth is that Alabama is already an established brand, and it is virtually an escalator to the NFL. They recruit nationally. UAB becoming better at football didn't threaten that. Having another big time football team in the state wouldn't hurt Alabama or Auburn. Texas is a football haven and it isn't hurt by the mass of schools there. Florida isn't in some football graveyard because it has more than two successful programs. UAB being good in any regard doesn't hurt anyone else. It'd only make things better.

The thing is that he has no reason to say or express all that. Why would he willingly make a distraction? Why would he ruffle the people above his head? Why create an environment where drama can be born? I can understand that. He is trying to win a national championship. His attention is on the playoffs. He doesn't want to be fielding questions about UAB so the best thing to do is throw out a line that sees both sides and be done with it.

After he leaves, Alabama will probably go through another rough transition and look like Michigan for a little while.

I have spoken to their coaches while they were recruiting at a High School I am at. They do want to play us and support UAB and UAB Football. Take that for what its worth.

I believe Saban's daughter works for the Bruno Event team under Gene Hallman.

RE: When Saban leaves ...
Saban's reference to "pay grade" could probably mean his pay from UA funds itself -- probably somewhere between $100,000 and $300,000 of his $7 point whatever million total pay. That is what reveals the lies told by the BOT back when they blocked the hire of Jimbo Fisher by UAB "because we couldn't afford him". The truth is UA can't afford Saban NOW if not for private source donations like those UAB had for paying Fisher. Like all their lies, that one was accepted by the public in Alabama because it came from the Crimson Mafioso leaders and was aimed at UA IN B'ham.

This is great insight and reporting here, good sir. I might need to DM you at some point. It's so true that having several strong teams only makes a state that much better. Just look at Florida. Again, this is all shortsightedness by people who don't really know what football's about. Maybe I should amend my original post on this thread.

If Saban stays, let's not ever piss off his kids.
