We are talking 1st round draft pick kind of value.
Very good chance it doesn't happen. What does that mean? The only out Harbaugh has is to retire from the NFL and then get hired on as Head Coach at a University.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But I thought the NFL put a stop to trading picks for coaches after Tampa Bay traded 4 picks for Jon Gruden?
No they haven't, but the 49ers are looking for a similar crack deal. SF rejected the Browns offer of two 3rd round picks for Harbaugh last year.
IIRC, Harbaugh has only one year left on his contract after this season. The 49ers' options are: (1) Bring back Harbaugh for the last year of his contract even though they don't want him there anymore and the players will tune him out because they know it's his last year. (2) Fire him and pay off the last year of his contract, which would mean he gets paid by the 49ers and is free to go to another NFL team right away. (3) Trade him for whatever you can get. Option (1) would just mean writing off the 2015 season, and (2) is just handing Harbaugh everything he could possibly want. Really the only leverage the 49ers have against a team that wants him is the threat of trading him to a different team instead.
Option 4 -- retire from coaching in the NFL and go to Michigan for the Mega Millions contract they would give him.
Why wait a year when you can go coach somewhere that the players won't throw overgrown man fits just because they don't like the way you talked to them?
Harbaugh is better with a college team. It might be a bitter pill to swallow to leave the NFL but if anything could cause that to happen, it would be all the BS he is having to deal with this year with this team.
