WMU extends Fleck through 2020 season
Well color me surprised, I thought Fleck would be on the first boat out of Kalamazoo (see what I did there?) once he had a good year or two.

Quote:The new six-year contract, which is not yet finalized, would run through the 2020 season.

Terms of the new contract were not immediately available from WMU officials.

According to the article he makes $392,500/year as of now, I'd be willing to bet he's getting a decent raise with a steep buyout attached. I'm interested to see where he takes the program given how well he's recruited the past few seasons.

He has been a breath of fresh air to what had become a stale football culture. We're lucky to have him.

If WMU is better next year, he will be gone. P5 programs who are struggling line up to hire those up and coming coaches who demonstrate the ability to turn around a program quickly, especially younger ones.

No doubt about it. Luckily for us he has proven adept at stockpiling talent. WMU has had 8 wins seasons before, but we have NEVER had talent like he has brought in the past few seasons. Its astonishing.

I think a buyout of 1, 2, or 3M is very doable for a P5 school looking for a young coach with a lot of upside appeal.

Extensions look good for recruiting, but otherwise mean very little. If he has another good year next year, he is going to get a bigger job. If he has three bad years in a row, he is getting fired.. Doesn't really matter how long a contract runs for.

The contract gives him a raise consistent with top coaches in the conference and more pay for assistants which is as we all know essential to maintaining some measure of staff continuity.

If Purdue or Iowa want to hire him next year then there is very little we can do about that but maybe this helps him not leave for a job like Houston or UConn. Hopefully we can all get our HCs to a level where we don't have to worry about them leaving for an AAC, CUSA or MWC job.

Knute has to win something moving on or he will be the next Bill Cubit.

You do realize the MAC is by far the lowest paying league across FBS for coaches. Unless Fleck is going to be the first million dollar coach in league history, saying you are the highest paid MAC coach means very little across FBS. MWC, AAC, and even the Sun Belt have coaches making over a million a year. The highest paid MAC coach is just north of $500K so the bar isn't very high. Being the highest paid MAC coach means you are still making less than half of what MWC and AAC coaches make and a lot of coordinators at P5 schools.

MAC teams give 10% or 20% pay increases and it sounds good on the surface but when you realize 20% of $400K is not the same as 20% of a million you quickly figure out that even with that 20% increase your are actually farther off the pace than you were the day before. The MAC will always lag in pay which will continue to make it increasingly more difficult to source and retain quality candidates. Troy's new coach is making $700K a year and has a $1.2 million pool for assistances. That blows the doors off what even the highest MAC program is paying and Troy isn't even the top payer in the Sun Belt.

Not this year. He may be two pretty good seasons from getting a P5 offer.

Other than that, he gave the usual "I-love-my-job-this-where-I-want-to-be-I'm-staying-here-until-I get-job-done" coachspeak that we have all heard a hundred times before from coaches that jumped when the big schools came calling.

He did cost his team a share of the West Title in that NIU game. Brutal.

Frankly, if I ran a P5 program I wouldn't steal away a MAC coach (or any G5 coach) until he had several good seasons under his belt.

Tell that to Pitt circa December 2010.

No one has ever said that Pittsburgh and Purdue are well run programs. Throw in Kansas with Turner Gill.
