Neither had I....you either bite the bullet and anty up or don't send those support groups. And those support groups are very much a big part of the gameday experience at JMU.

And, in the case of the MRDs they're part of the University's brand, and having them not travel is inconceivable at this point.

Yeah these people can't be bothered to look into contact with FBS conferences but they don't mind digging this up.

Is that $200k bid for the opening round? Or all rounds?

RE: Playoff Bid to be released
I like the JMU released the info on their own terms, not just a number in the paper. I have told some of them personally, but I'll say it again - thanks to JB and JMU admin for getting it done at home this year. It's a shame the score didn't work out in our favor, or else with a Villanova win last week we are hosting at home again this weekend.

Anyone on this board needs to back up the University and point to the benefits listed in this bid communication when it comes to haters who will undoubtedly hate in the next week or so. At least the students are headed out for break and the Breeze probably isn't printing any longer. With any luck it'll get buried in the headlines when students return from break.

Also - Did you all receive this in email? I know they sent one but I never received it & found it odd (given the amount of other JMU sports emails that I receive).

Poor Bourne. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. This is why the approx. 13K attendance at the Liberty game sucked so badly.

But no, I wouldn't call this transparency. I would call this covering their hind quarters.

RE: Playoff Bid to be released
I completely understand JB wanting to keep the bid under wraps, but I also don't begrudge the media for going after it. It's their job to do so and I don't see it as a witch hunt that some people are portraying it to be. Obviously there will be some negative reaction, but JB did a good job of getting out in front of it and explaining the rationale behind the number.

They were in a no win situation here. They had to get a home game after the bitching and moaning. You guys deserved a home game in the new stadium is the reality, and they had to go big vs Liberty.

RE: Playoff Bid to be released
I don't get this "damned if you do, damned if you don't" complaint. I doubt any "media" will be complaining about an overbid. DNR and The Breeze just want the story and the $ number as they should as news reporting publications, not some secret agenda to blast Bourne for an overbid. By saying its a no win situation just moves accountability away from the athletics department when they don't do their due diligence as is the case in 2012 (when we advised Oduh and then watched them play on their home field).

Faculty Senate might, MIGHT, try to connect some logic behind "If athletics has enough money to overbid on a playoff game then athletics has enough money to lower the student athletic fees," but I doubt it. I think they are smarter than making a stink about a $25K(?) loss for a home playoff game.

I appreciate the letter and they did a great job of outline the background, the thought process and the many benefits of hosting the game. I wish they had mentioned the possible costs of an away game but perhaps that doesn't make up for the loss that they might have experienced.

Maybe I'm too optimistic but I don't see any backlash coming.

Will we ever find out exactly what we ended up losing? I really can't imagine it's that much.

Worth it in my opinion to continue to ensure that the Flames have never hosted a playoff game even with all their internet money.

All I know is that the club was felt pretty full compared to most games. If 60% full, that is $60,000 in ticket revenue right there for 600 tickets.

RE: Playoff Bid to be released
I guess the media will eventually release the numbers in detail, but my 'back of the napkin' estimate suggests the shortfall ended up somewhere around 90K. But that's taking a swag at the ticket distribution which could swing the number quite a bit one way or another.

So someone check this math for me - the way the article reads. Is that to say we have a bill for 200K to the NCAA, and a $152K bill for a football game, and so our expenses for a football game on 11/29/14 was $352K? minus whatever revenue we took in from ticket sales, and that's the number that we're out, right?

Yes. Don't forget other revenue. Concessions and book store merchandise.

That's the way I read it. And depending on how much we got from the 13K+ ticket sales is where I came up with my guesstimate.

Announced attendance was 13,040 (under reported most likely) at $25 per pop is $326,000...I would guess there is likely 20k or so of revenue from concessions/merchandise sales as well.
