To me it means by the time the next meeting rolls around, we'll have only memories of a football program, good coaches will have jobs elsewhere, and our players will be starting class at a different university. This isn't to say football, bowling, and rifle cant return in the future, but it will be from scratch... in a difference conference.

RE: Senate meeting
I'm not sure what you guys expected. The Senate does not have the power to fire Watts, and does not have the power to overrule the football decision. I think some of you guys were thinking by this afternoon the football team would be back at practice. This is a long term fight and it's likely that there won't be a UAB football team next season.

And in terms of the vote or not to vote or whatever, the bylaws say you have to offer the resolution and vote the next time around. I would not be so discouraged about this process. I'm shocked that they have offered the resolution at all.

This faculty senate is a worthless body with no vision and no teeth.

Truthfully, I don't think you guys could have gotten much better. Typical Faculty Senates don't have a ton of power here outside of a No Confidence Vote, which as has been pointed out, takes a full month process because the full faculty has to weigh in before the resolved Item can be voted on.

I was fully expecting a draft of a resolution supporting athletics, and urging the President to work with them on this in the future.

The fact the are willing to even address a no confidence vote is progress. You guys need to be working on saving UAB football period, not trying to reinstate it before next season.

Yep. Pretty unfortunate. Wish they would try to push the decision.

With all due respect to your 20 years in academics, I respectfully disagree. This is as good of an outcome as we could hope for today. The fact that they will entertain a "no confidence" resolution is huge for us. If they shoot from the hip and act today, they will have done the same thing Ray Watts did. I'm willing to let the process play out. They are following their rules. We all need to email the members thanking them for their careful deliberation of the matter. They could have just as easily blown us off.

They called a special meeting in January and everything. I think they're doing this as fast as they can. I was told that this was the best outcome we could hope for today.

You are right. This iteration of UAB football is dead.

We're not working on Blazers 2.0.

We need to wrap our collective head around that fact.

I agree. The key is to keep the fervor going through the holidays. We need to have double the size at the January meeting and put the Senate members on your Christmas card list.

Me too. It was more than I was expecting. Circulating the No Confidence and Football measures is a major threat. There are people (Jeffco, McCallum, Hire) reaching out to Watts, giving him a path to walk this back and keep his job. I think the faculty wants him to listen and not let this get any uglier or worse for the school's image. At least I hope that's what they are thinking.
If there was anyone down there in admin with brains, they would see the potential feel good story of a restoration. There would be more interest in UAB athletics and in the undergraduate school than ever before.

I think this is incredibly encouraging. Football ain't happening next year, but if we can get this done before CUSA boots us I will be thrilled.

This is a decision that will shape the next 100 years at UAB, 1 football season is just a drop in the bucket for what this mean

From everything I read beforehand, this seemed like the best possible outcome.(short of Watts just resigning). I'm encouraged by this. A month gives him a lot of time to fight for votes though, it'll be interesting to follow.

RE: Senate meeting
My brothers and sisters, this was a very good day. This fight is going to go on for a long time.

Had they issued a directive telling Watts to re-instate football, rifle and bowling (which some Senators were willing to do), what was the next step when Watts answered, "Ummm, no."?

Watts must go. The Senate did their job today. I am enormously proud of all our people, Senate included.

If his lack of success over the weekend is any indication of how well he will do over the holidays, I'm not worried.

We might be able to scramble together 50 scholarships and play some D-2 schools or something, just to keep cobwebs from growing in the football building.

We still have no clue what the numbers are for and against him though, right? That video was one of the best things that could have happened for us, because it makes watts look like a heartless bastard. That has been viewed across the country, and that is now one of the first things people think of when they hear the letters UAB.

Didn't they have to have 2/3 agree to move forward with vote of no confidence? If so that makes me think we have the votes now and that unless some folks flip that will be the likely verdict.

So basically he admitted to his wrongdoings to get a yes vote next month. We have to make him say that he is dedicated to football.
