Big 12 Conference Championship Game - Biggest Knee Jerk Reaction ever!!!
First let me say, I was really rooting for Baylor or TCU to get a playoff spot but I honestly can understand why Ohio St got in ahead of them. What OSU did on Saturday with their 3rd string QB was probably was of the most amazing thing I had ever seen on the football field. Even if you thought Wisconsin was overrated, OSU put on a show for the ages.

That said, because TCU or Baylor not making the playoffs the college football talking heads has amp talks of the Big 12 considering expansion to 12 teams in order to host a championship game. The talking heads believe if the Big 12 not having a championship game hurt TCU and Baylor chances. Also, the Big 12 Commish not straight out saying there would be a single champ, not co-champs also hurt them. I say this is BS. You don't need a CG to determine a champion. If the Big 12 had just simply applied to tie-breaker rules Baylor would have been the outright champ because of their victory over TCU.

Futhermore, you in essence had a Big 12 CG because Baylor would have play Kansas St if one existed. Previous divisions setups have indicated KSU and Baylor would have played in different divisions. But lets say the Baylor/KSU game was the defacto CG, it would not have changed anything in regards to OSU getting into the playoffs. Ohio State beat the stank out of Wisconsin, the 14th ranked with the #2 ranked defense Badgers on a neutral field 59-0. The only way Baylor would have been able to overcome that would have been beating KSU in similar fashion.

But, the Big 12 was also a loss from FSU or Ohio St getting one team in the playoffs. The Big 12 would have had both Baylor and TCU in the playoffs if both OSU and FSU had lost. My opinion is that the Big 12 should let the dust and knee jerk reactions settle down but change nothing. It's the first year of the playoffs, we knew one or potentially two P5 conferences were going to get left out. Guess what, someone is going to get left out next year as well. It was the Big 12 this year. It may be the PAC 12 next year. Point is there will always be someone complaining until we get to 8 teams. And even then there will still be bitching.

But for now, the Big 12 does not need to expand. My bet is that they will get approved for an exemption because Bowlsby will be able to prove adding two new schools will not increase the payout per school but actually decrease it. And the current schools, regardless if they feel they got screwed by the Selection Committee is not going to want their paychecks cut just to add two members and a CG.

You may be right, but they also may have quite possibly cost themselves millions of dollars by not having it not only for the rights for the single game, but also from playoff monies.

Maybe, but we're not even having this discussion had Baylor or TCU had made the playoffs or if it was an 8-team playoff. This is why it is an overreaction.

Frank the Tank makes a great argument about an 8 team playoff with the B12 having a CCG and the monies that could be made from the single game alone.

The presidence has been set by the committee (or even the old BCS computers). The Big 12 will not make it to a playoff unless that team is undefeated and the rest of the conferences have a loss or two.
The Big 10 CCG is what help leap OSU over TCU and kept Baylor at bay, by having an additional win.
So 12 wins is better than 11 wins.

My thoughts exactly.

We were a couple upset away from everyone freaking out that the Big 12 has an advantage not having a champ game.

I'll give you credit, I'm not sure I'd be as calm as you are if my team had just been jumped in that way.

My Texas Tech grad cousin is furious and wants BB fired. He wants to go to 12, have a conference championship game, and add Cincinnati and another team from Texas (he said he didn't care if it was UTEP).

I think he believes that Tech will be screwed if they ever get their program back on track.

But one loss is better than 2 losses and the champ games at their heart is a good chance for your best team to get an extra loss on the last day. If any of the four teams get upset in the championship game, they are out of the playoff.

The Big 12 had teams knocked out of the BCS champ several years, and other leagues without championships (at the time) benefited.

I want them to add teams just because I want enough dominoes to fall so that we land somewhere better than the ASUN.

wouldn't go that far. If B12 champ is 11-1 and there's a 2 loss champ- would think B12 would have a real shot there.

Meanwhile, all of the other conference CCG hasn't had that scenario happen as much as the Big 12. Its one thing when there were 2 spots for fight for, but now there are 4, where even if a lower ranked team beating the higher ranked team in the CCG can get into the top 4 depending on rankings.
I know the Big 12 is still shell shocked about a better team losing in the CCG to a lower team, but guess what...sometimes it happens but as the Big 12 found out, not even having a CCG will cost them even more in the playoff era. The Big 12 is still acting like its the BCS.

I think if FSU lost one but won the ACC champ, both TCU and Baylor would be ahead of them this year.

Also, if an 11-1 Big 12 champ has a high quality non-conference win like Oregon over Mich St, I think it would likely be fine most years at 11-1.

Every year is different. Can't make any generalizations, IMO.

I don't think we can say that based on one year. I really think more often than not no having a champ game will be an advantage. If all the top teams win like this year, it is a disadvantage. But there was only a 14% chance heading into the weekend all would win. Most of the time there is going to be at least one upset in the champ games. This occurrence was the exception, not the rule.

1 big thing the Big 12 needs to do is upgrade their OOC schedule.. It's pretty much hideous...

KSU S Dakota, UTSA, La Tech
Okla- Akron, Tenn, Tulsa
Okla St- C Mich, C Ark, UTSA

I think Minn ended up ranked.

I don't think you really get hurt if your bad teams don't play anyone, only your good teams. Baylor's philosophy is hurting them and the league.

If Florida State or Alabama lost their CCG, they were out and so was the conference. As it turned out, having a CCG didn't hurt this year and not having one MIGHT have hurt the Big 12. That could have just as easily been reversed though. Do people really forget this quickly the times we've had CCGs throw teams out of the national title picture?

you are right. So 1/30 OOC opponents ranked this year. That's pathetic.

And worst part- the team with I think the toughest schedule- is one of your worst teams- Kansas. FCS team yeah(who made FCS Playoff at least) but then AAC co-champ Memphis, and Bowl Eligible Rutgers.

Also just looking Baylor isn't the only one scheduling to get bowl eligible. Baylor, Iowa St, Kansas ST, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St all in that boat. At least respect Texas Tech with a challenging Arkansas team.

Without the CCG Ohio State doesn't make it. Thus, that is definitely an example of it helping them.
