Can someone explain our endowment?
I know we haven't been the most popular university over our history since being established in 1895, but a simple Google search of other universities has me scratching my head as to why our endowment is extremely puny for an institution of its size. We must have been victims of a Ponzi scheme, damn you Bernie.

Shame for all the sorority girls. No one wants to hear we Huskies aren't well endowed! Extremely puny? Maybe it's all those cornfields. Too much pollen mixed with cold weather may lead to shrinkage.

Have to remember we were a teachers school until about 50 years ago. Not a lot of extra capital to donate with teachers, add in lack of attention and professional staff and that adds up to being underendowed. They are taking a much more active approach in recent years. I'm sure we all (or at least those of a certain age) know highly compensated or well capitalized individuals who could donate. The key is getting them to donate which with the attention the football team is generating may be an easier sell.

NIU also has an extremely large amount of debt compared to other schools of its size.

Also, off topic, but have you done the Yuenglings (spelling) tour in Tampa?
My family in Miami has gone to Tampa to meet others and did the tour and said it was awesome. I was in Tampa last month and didn't do it, but have to go back next summer for a wedding and wanted to know a locals thoughts.

Three Daughters in St Pete is excellent. In fact St Pete has four microbreweries downtown all making their own beer. Three Daughters, Cycle Brewing, St Pete Brewing, and Green Bench. Green Bench and Three daughters are the largest and usually have a food truck parked outside. Cigar City in Tampa has excellent beer.

90% of it. Did not have the multi-millionaire's reinvesting, their co's investing and most important patents that come with those companies.

Okay, since you didn't understand it, yet St pete did.
Everything outside of U of I, run by the state of Illinois is not exactly funded well. All other educational institutions, all funds, etc.

There was no endowment before then. That was literally the first time it existed. We've come a long way in a short period of time.
As pointed out elsewhere, Before the baby boomers, there were no deep pocketed alums. Us teachers don't, nor will we ever, have enough jack to get our names on a building.

Keep in mind, that 90% of donations come from 10% of the alumni. We have a very limited amount of super rich alumni compared to U of I. Very few of our buildings are named after wealthy donors or corporate sponsors.

U of I has only been around since 1867, being a high level institution from day one. They have an almost $2 billion dollar endowment due to all the donations over the years, the companies, the studies, experiments, research and patents, just like the likes of a Texas and Ohio St, contrary to the believe of many "sports" didn't make them wealthy.
When you have a jump that far ahead of others, the investment on investments...people giving back not in the 1k, 10k, 100k but the 1+million, even 10's of millions it makes NIU's look like chump change. And it has nothing to do with poor State. Simply put they are the State's flagship public school.

Thanks for the link. We are 566 out of 849 universities and colleges. We have some giving to do.
And there are still people that think we belong in the Big 12 with Texas.
