Huh? I was there in July and didn't think there was a rust issue. Didn't see many bird droppings either, but I suppose that could be the case if the cleaning budget has been cut.

One thing that I've done a couple of times and very much enjoyed is the Pacific Islanders Cultural Center (whatever it's called) on the northeast coast of Oahu. It's run by the Mormons as an adjunct to BYU-Hawaii. The people working there are primarily BYU-Hawaii students from the various islands, who work there to pay for school. It's a worthwhile visit. You can spend half a day or more there. You can get transportation back and forth from Honolulu.

Agree completely!

It's the Polynesian cultural Center: http://www.polynesia.com/

It's not inexpensive, but it's a very good value, especially if you spend all day there -- it's a long drive from Honolulu -- and enjoy all the interesting daytime cultural demonstrations and take in the evening luau and show. All are excellent and typically much better than those at Waikiki hotels and similar resorts.

For some reason, the oil bubbling up is what gets to me every time.

I flew on Aeroflot a few years back from Seoul to Moscow. The plane still had the gun turrets from its pre-commercial days. I really thought it might be my last flight.

And here I thought the Tiger liked you...wow booking you on an Aeroflot flight.

It would be nice if we could find a way to get 1,000 fans over there and seated together, but I know that's probably asking a lot. I'm going to buy a ticket anyway as a souvenir, like I did last year. I hope many other Rice fans can do the same.

This Bleacher Report bowl rundown says the outcome of our game with Fresno State is "Never in doubt": http://bleacherreport.com/articles/22899...me/page/11

Ben Kercheval Wrote:Matchup: Fresno State vs. Rice

There was no Mountain West title for Fresno State, but a trip to Hawaii for the holidays is a nice consolation prize. The Bulldogs defense is statistically awful, giving up almost 33 points per game, but Rice isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut.

The Owls are a middle-of-the-road Conference USA team that scores 29 points a game and is so-so efficiency wise (5.52 yards per play). The Fresno St. quarterback-wide receiver combo of Brian Burrell and Josh Harper should be able to keep pace.

Matchup Type: Never in doubt

Predicted Winner: Fresno State

With the large miltary population on Oahu, could we get the Rice Navy (and Marine Corps option) ROTC and Fresno Army ROTC color guards out for the game and play up the Army-Navy angle with free or discounted tickets for service members to fill the stadium. Instead of buying a ticket as a souvenir buy one for a soldier, sailor or marine.

I couldn't make the Liberty Bowl last year and bought a ticket through the donate to disadvantaged youth program (forgot the name). Will be happy to do so again or to the military, whatever the program is where we'll get credit.

Generally my experience with Aeroflot has been good, but this one flight/plane was a real outlier. I think I picked the flight based on schedule and the fact it was nonstop. I should have checked and researched the aircraft type.

Good luck in the Hawaii Bowl. I'm sure you will represent the city better than we did in 2002. I hope it's just as exciting of a game, but you guys win and then don't get in a fight.

A bowl game between a #74 and #75 team? Sounds exciting

Sounds like an even matchup that also emphasizes that there are a ridiculous number of bowl games.

The Bahamas Bowl matches (66) Western Kentucky (8-5) vs. (92) Central Michigan (7-5).

Can't wait!
