From the CA this morning...
Liberty Bowl: ‘Tennessee is the team we want'
Quote:“It’s the flagship university of the state, and they haven’t played in our game in 28 years,” Graeter said. “... . There’s a huge base of alums in this part of the state. There are 9,000 UT Knoxville alums within 25 miles, so that’s a substantial number of alumni here. Coming here would certainly dovetail what Butch is trying to do from a recruiting standpoint and it dovetails with the university trying to attract students from Memphis.”

I hate UTK as much as anyone, but to argue that it's not the flagship school of TN is dumb.

From a football standpoint they are the flagship of the state. They will put paying fans in the Liberty Bowl with a sale out. Will be good for the bowl and the city of Memphis. We really can't argue.

When you work for Coke, you sell Coke. When you work for Pepsi, you sell Pepsi.
Harold Graeter has always struck me as a nice guy.

The more people like Graeter make such statements publicly, the more it is in the minds of Tennesseans, but I don't think there is anything anywhere which makes UT-K officially or legally "the flagship". There IS an official designation of UT-K and UofM as being the state's two research universities. And before you mention UT-K's "land grant" origin, does being "land grant" make Miss State, Auburn, Texas A&M or Oklahoma State better than Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas or Oklahoma, respectively?

From a football standpoint In any way you want to look at it really, they are the flagship of the state of Tennessee's university system, inclusive of both the UT and Board of Regents institutions, and are only land grant institution that's a traditional university in the state. There may be individual programs, academic or otherwise that are better at other state run institutions, but UT is the flagship of the whole system. They will put paying fans in the Liberty Bowl with a sale out. Will be good for the bowl and the city of Memphis. We really can't argue.
A little editing

I don't know about the rest of them but Miss. State > OM by a long shot.

If it's not 10C, then who is it?
Memphis? Tell that to someone East of Jackson with a straight face?
Vandy? Private school, think not ..
Middle? UTC? ETSU? Tenn State?
Doesn't make UT any less hated by Memphis fans, or any better of a school. It is what it is, trying to state differently makes you look foolish.

I still think Texas v Arkansas would be a dream matchup for the Liberty Bowl and the city as a whole.

Bowls are all about money and those 2 teams would certainly fill the LB. I don't know if they'd fill the hotels and restaurants, though, as many fans live in driving distance. One of those teams plus a team from a little further away with fans who will travel might be better.

The points I was trying to make were:
(1) "flagship" isn't an OFFICIAL designation
(2) The extent to which UT-K is perceived as a "flagship" depends largely upon people like you and Harold Graeter saying they are.
To those points I will add that if having "Tennessee" in their name qualifies UT-K as "flagship" then we must also include "TENNESSEE Tech".
