What was Jim Phillips' direct connection to NIU? How about Compher, or Frazier? Have you ever heard of executive search firms like Parker?
Oregon State was familiar enough with Pettibone's success and recruiting reputation despite no bowl appearance; they took Steve Simmons after he got NIU men's soccer into the NCAA tournament ... so you believe people on the West coast never hear or read anything outside of their area.

Simmons was an assistant at Oregon State prior to coming to NIU.

Phillips was at ND and Frazier was at Wis where I'm pretty sure they had dealings with NIU in multiple situation. I'm not 100 percent sure though.
