Week 14 Thoughts:
-Modern rivalry week did not disappoint (traditional rivalry weekend having been last week, but only a few major rivalries remain then). We saw one or our 2 undefeated teams lose with Marshall going to overtime with Western Kentucky and loosing as the WKU went for 2 after a touchdown. Our last unbeaten in Florida State survived another close game, this time vs. Florida.
-On the 1-loss side, we lost two more. We saw Mississippi State go down to Ole Miss, likely ending the hope for 2 SEC teams. We also saw Colorado State lose to Air Force. Even among the winners, there were big scares this week with Ohio State beating arch-rival Michigan, but for the second time in just over 3 months losing a quarterback being talked about for Heisman. How that will affect them in the Big Ten Championship and for the playoff committee is now very much a concern.
Week 14 Thoughts:
-With only one week left in the regular season, let’s look at all our remaining teams on these lists:
Marshall: With Marshall loosing this week, the Group of 5 automatic bid is all for the taking for Boise State. If they lose in the Mountain West title game however, they aren’t eligible and who would take it instead is a very open debate. Marshall is certainly in the running at that point if they win this week. Other likely ones are Northern Illinois and Memphis with Central Florida and Cincinnati also standing an outside chance.
Alabama: They were down for a while vs. Auburn, but pulled out and won decently. They are certainly in with a win over Missouri in the SEC title game and probably #1. It’s possible Oregon could jump them, but either way Alabama would be in the Sugar Bowl. If they lose, that might put the committee in an interesting spot. They will probably be reluctant to not include any SEC teams, but Missouri would have a hard time making it in over other possible teams. If Alabama loses, it will probably take other upsets to get an SEC team in. If those happen, I do not think Mississippi State can get back in it based on their current ranking and no more games. It would be Alabama (maybe Missouri) or bust.
Oregon: Pretty clear cut. If they win they host the Rose Bowl. If not, they are out. They are playing Arizona whom they lost to earlier this year.
Florida State: Win and they are in. I think with a win they move back up to #3.
TCU and Baylor: TCU is #3 this week with Baylor #6. That #3 vs. #4 ranking is a very big deal for the Horned Frogs given they play Iowa State this week. I doubt Baylor can pass the Horned Frogs, but this is a major schedule boost this week playing Kansas State. With the possibility of Florida State or Ohio State also moving past TCU (the latter I think unlikely even with a win, but the former likely imo), I don’t think we can say for sure either team is in with a win, but TCU is very likely and Baylor still stands a decent chance (although they need some help).
Ohio State: Heading onto their 3rd quarterback, this week’s game vs. Wisconsin is now a very open question. The Buckeyes are now a 4.5 point underdog and their odds at winning a national title dropped way down on betting sites (15 to 1 now). In all likelihood, the Buckeyes need to win this week and need one program above them to lose.
SMU: They have one last chance to win a game and it’s this week vs. UConn.
