FYI - CUSA backup for New Orleans Bowl
I think Banowskyi s is the G5 Ninja Swofford. Most people thought CUSA was out of luck with Bitcoin and Duck backups, apparently they had a deal with New Orleans no one really knew about.

http://www.nola.com/ragincajuns/index.ss...owl_e.html

The New Orleans Bowl is contracted with the Mountain West Conference for this season to fill the slot opposite the Sun Belt. However, Ferrante said there is a possibility the Mountain West won't have enough teams to fill all its spots.

If that is the case, Ferrante said a team from Conference USA would be selected.

RE: FYI - CUSA backup for New Orleans Bowl
this might just be the key to hgetting a P5 in the armed forces bowl vs houston
almsot every projection has had a Mac or P5 in either bowl and flipped depending on the projection...if NO bowl is stuck with C-usa the AF bowl gets the P5

sucks for temple and their chances of getting abowl tho

i just explained why this is important to the league above..this could be the difference between getting Florida/UNC or ohio from the MAC or rice from C-usa in the AF bowl

Well maybe UAB will get a chance to play a final game after all.

Not sure why I would go back to a MAC board when my school is part of the P5 and already assured a bowl. 02-13-banana

I watch some AAC games and find this one of the better boards to talk college football. I thought this might be of interest since I know Temple may need a place to land and this deal was not really known.

The school would lose money playing int he bowl game.
Since they are already losing money for future games against teams like Tennessee and Kentucky...I doubt UAB's president would be willing to lose more money.

Well the MWC has 7 bowl eligible teams and only 6 bowls. Are we assuming they get the access bowl and the backup for the cactus bowl in this scenario? That would be the 3rd team for the Cactus (1st access, 2nd Vegas). Not sure the Cactus bowl would be willing to do that.

They don't have a lot of choice. That's what the Cactus agreed to. They get the second pick after the access bowls have selected. Every non-CFP bowl knows they might move down a slot if their conference tie is granted more access bowl slots than expected.

Well did they or is the backup contingent on it being one of the top 2 teams? I have seen a lot of projections with someone other than the MWC getting that Cactus although it could be just poor journalism but maybe they have additional insight we don't.

I have seen a lot of predictions that have nothing to do with anything. I think the real issue is does CUSA have any backup agreement with the Armed Forces Bowl. Many of their posters claim they do---I even assumed it was so-----but I cant find any evidence of it. It could be a quiet little agreement like the NOLA deal, or the CUSA posters could just flat be wrong.

If Ft Worth cant get a P5 and NOLA has a claim on CUSA extra teams--we could end up with Texas State as our opponent in Ft Worth. The other CUSA option, UAB, would probably not be selected over Texas State. I dont think the AFB would take a MAC team because a MAC team wont sell 14 tickets to that bowl. On the other hand, nearby Texas State would likely send a decent number of fans there--plus a large number of Texas State grads likely live in Ft Worth. I don't really care who we play at this point. I have so little faith in this coaching staff we might be better off playing the worst opponent possible.

Yeah I do agree I don't see anything that says C-USA has a backup with the Armed Forces. I have seen posts that indicate they do as well so I guess we shall see. I swear some of this back-ups have contingencies and opt-outs as well if a better opponent is available.

Similar deal Aersco has done with Liberty. Cactus gets 2nd pick, Vegas bowl is not required to take champ but gets first pick. If access is available the know it goes to third.

RE: FYI - CUSA backup for New Orleans Bowl
CUSA and SBC have back up agreements to the bowl the years they are not primary. If you remember back, this was one of the later bowls to announce affiliations. They wanted to be a part of the G5 pool. My understanding the AAC was the holdup. Basically, CUSA and SBC each gave up two primary spots in return for backups should either the MWC or AAC not send a team...which is/could be a real possibility for both conferences. BTW, I heard this from the Mobile folks who also explored joining the G5 pool. CUSA also has a secondary backup with the AF bowl as does the MAC and ESPN bowl pool. Per a Christmas bowl tweet from earlier in the year, the PAC opted to put their 8th selection in the bowl pool rather than tie in with them. Several articles I've seen project the PAC to the AF bowl if they have an eligible team. CUSA may very well get that slot, but it is not a guarantee. If you compare 2013 to 2014+ bowls, CUSA lost primary spots, but secured backups where they could...Hawaii (part time), AF (part time), NO (two times), St. Pete (part time). The only ones they got completely shut out of are LB and Military. Not that they wanted to lose those bowls, but I think they're making out okay except for needing one or two more primaries (depending on expansion).

Where secondary ESPN bowl pool agreements get interesting is with the MAC. IIRC, they have five primary guarantees, but at least one (maybe more) year(s) where only four are set. The initial release stated the fifth would come from backup agreements. In that case, a MAC team may supersede other agreements simply listed as secondary. FWIW, the only ESPN games I can find that this wouldn't apply to are St. Pete and B'ham where the conditionals (CUSA/ACC) would have priority before the MAC could jump others.

I posted a link that showed this in a June 2014 article about CUSA and AF but that could have changed. Why I was asking, some people got upset saying no it wasn't true. If I find the link I will post, but I think Banowsky is the Swofford of the G5. He seems able to do his deals quietly.

Yes, CUSA has a secondary to the AF bowl with the same priority as others in the ESPN bowl pool. They very well could get picked over a MAC if no P5 schools are needing a home. The bowl will go with whatever team fits its' needs best. I'm not too worried about CUSA bowls as I think they'll work it out for this year. But, if the Big12 is not able to fulfill their slot next year, I hope CUSA has a good backup plan as HOD is their only P5 guaranteed bowl.

I believe next season we have 7 bowls for 12 teams...

2015 Season
BBVA Compass Bowl, Birmingham, Ala. – vs. SEC
Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Fla. – vs. Conference USA
Miami Beach Bowl, Miami, Fla. – vs. Conference USA
Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman, Annapolis, Md. – vs. ACC
Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, Honolulu, Hawaii – vs. Mountain West
Boca Raton Bowl, Boca Raton, Fla. – vs. MAC
Cure Bowl, Orlando, Fla. - vs. Sun Belt

Some great travel destinations on that list...

I wonder if Aersco will be willing to sell a bowl slot again to get a different opponent in the Miami Bowl next year? That gamble blew up big time this year. First, even with getting BYU, ESPN gave it the worst bowl slot time of any bowl. Next, with BYU losing it's QB and not really having a backup was a very mediocre team. Finally, it may cost Temple a bowl game that would have been there.

It will be very interesting for 2015, I have a feeling the ACC will be offering them a team next season too get another bowl since the Orange Bowl will be a Semi. Probably, shipping CUSA to the cure bowl. Which I think CUSA will jump all over to get an Orlando bowl. After this season, do you gamble again on not being able to place a team in a bowl to get a low tier P5 opponent? One thing I think will help, the time slot might be better since the ACC prefers not to play in Pre-Christmas Bowls. I think Bitcoin is moving to Pre-Christmas because the ACC stated when it is the scheduled opponent, the game most be post Christmas.
