Exclamation We've Got the RIGHT Guy in Place
I've always wondered why it went down that Justin Fuente was hired at Memphis...after serious duscussions at that point in time had taken place with coach Jim McElwain.
Don't get me wrong, I think Fuente is the man...and I LOVE that he was hired. He has done things the right way, and seemingly for now WANTS to be at Memphis.
Contrast that with McElwain, who 6 months ago signed a huge deal at Colorado State (10 years $7.5 million dollar buyout, but the buyout COULD be reduced the the university president if McElwain's 'dream' job opened up)
McElwain has put his coaching future at CSU in doubt if neither he nor the University of Florida who wants to hire him can finaggle out of his buyout.
Recruits will know he doesn't want to be there, CSU knows he doesn't want to be there.
Kudos to the school for holding firm to the terms of the contract. They should NOT just roll over for Florida.

But back to my point....this could have happened at Memphis.
What if we win our first conference championship under the other guy...and right during bowl season talk....you discover that he is already talking to another school? It's John L. Smith screwing his Louisville players all over again. (Smith's players found out at halftime of their bowl game that Smith was talking to Michigan State about their job opening)

RE: We've Got the RIGHT Guy in Place
Seeing as how McElwain just agreed to become the coach at Florida, I guess the buyout was finally agreed upon.
Non-story now.
Point still holds....that could have been our coach ditching us...

If Florida called him, no one here would hold it against Justin. I sure as hell wouldn't.

I wouldn't hold it against him, unless the man had you know....signed a 10 year deal to stay at the school.
When someone signs a contract like THAT...I expect him to honor it.
If it had been a 3 year deal...ok I could see him wanting out of that. But it was a 10 year deal. Something a lot more tangible. It was a promise from the school to the guy that they were intent on supporting his program, and investing in his work.
McElwain in turn said, if you pledge to do all of that, I pledge to be here for the length of that contract.

Me either. Looking at the bigger picture, the folks running the show now had JF and JM as the 2 finalists to replace Porter. Stark contrast to RC and his list. If something happens and a new basketball coach is to be hired, I have the utmost confidence in the replacement committee.

I see where you are coming from, but I imagine that CSU could fire him four years from now (not abiding by their 10 year promise) if things were different from now.

RE: We've Got the RIGHT Guy in Place
Another piece of hypocrisy in all of this...is that recruits have to sit out a year...unless granted some kind of waiver from the NCAA after transferring to another school.
Yet coaches lie McElwain, and Arizona State's Todd Graham can leave with impunity.

I wouldn't. He has a buyout in his contract. The university wouldn't automatically pay it out; they would negotiate a lower rate. Also, if the university was in a situation where a much better candidate was available; they wouldn't hesitate for a second to replace him.

People have to do what they can to look out for their best interests. As long as they represent the school the right way while they are an employee, it's all good.

CSU & McElwain decided that it was in their best interests that he sign a 10 year deal.
IF it had been a 3 year deal...then you could reasonably say...well gee...I didn't know a BIGGER job was going to come along and offer me its spot.
But with a 10 year deal....you pretty much put a ring on their finger, and your finger, and agreed to marry each other for a 10 year deal.
Now yes, other factors could have come into play....lets say he had a losing season two or three years in a row....or tried to have 'relations' with the university president's wife.
It just seems to me, that when you sign a long term deal...you better make DAMN sure that is what you really want....cuz you should/could be stuck with it.
This is just a glaring example of the fact that coaches are hired mercenaries.
