Regardless of the better weather, don't want to end up playing South Alabama or Arkansas State. Don't even care if they are decent teams - they have no "curb appeal". A lose-lose for us. I'd rather see us play in Detroit against Illinois than in warm Southern weather against those teams. I guess I can return the favor to the South by saying, are those FCS teams?

If a team is in the same bowl four years in a row, doesn't it imply they are just hosting their own bowl or something seriously stagnant about their conference. Wouldn't want either of those games. Montgomery is so land locked with little to do once you visit a museum or two, which are better as part of a tour of the whole South.

This year is going to be for the extra practice more-so than for the fans, I think.

BYU in Miami would be nice. Big name program in one of my favorite cities.

We'd better start embracing those other G5 teams because they're our brothers. Like it or not, we're all stuck in the same boat now.

Amen. The ship for Toledo to move "up" has long since sailed--as it has for ANY MAC team. And given what I think will eventually happen to college revenue sports at the "power" level (a charade rather than young people truly playing for the honor of their school while getting an education), I can be OK with that.

How well did the MAC do against the "stagnant" conference lately, in bowls? I don't remember too many wins. Time for a mid major playoff system. It would at least add some interest. I would argue that ditching games against p5 schools, for an all G5 slate that involved playoffs would be much more interesting. There is no longer any benefit to playing p5 schools.

Except for fan interest, upsets ,payouts, and drawing crowds to your stadium. I'd rather play a bad Iowa State than EMU. From what I can see of the play-off system so far is -there's going to be a lot of P5 schools and their fans that are going to be unhappy with the system. This greed/cartel could be the beginning of the end of college football.

They have a strong fanbase and seem like pretty good folks.

35 wins in 4 years = a team with no curb appeal? Or 4 straight bowls? Or a school recently known for developing coaches(Malzahn, Freeze and Harsin) but no curb appeal?

We could say the same thing we were wanting a crack at NIU

Besides ULL, stAte has the best name left in the belt. Of all the teams, I wanted them because they arent a shlub name but are having a rather shlub season. Could be a good sounding victory. Toledo should be favored. Cant wait to play em in front of their fans.

Its more because the Sun Belt basically allows the bowls to do their own things. There is no requirement of who must be selected. The Champ or co champs must be placed, but New Orleans and Go Daddy don't have to take them.

AState and ULL draw the most fans in the conference by far. We travel in large numbers for bowl games. Because of that the bowls are far more comfortable taking what they know than taking a chance on an unknown.

Mobile businesses actually lobbied the Go Daddy Bowl to take Arkansas State over hometown South Alabama this year because they like the way our fans travel.

Good argument but I have to imagine your fans are wondering the same about Toledo. I think it will be all about how it is promoted up here, which most likely it won't be. But you make a good promotion.

Don't take it personally. Our bowl games over the past 15 years have been Cincinnati, Boston College, Connecticut, Texas-El Paso, Air Force, Utah State and can't remember others. Those games were against some recognized name programs that have had a strong history - or are major universities. Those schools have what I called "curb appeal" - which is for our fans and casual followers in and around the Toledo area. No one knows anything about Arkansas State - other than they used to be one of our "warm-up" games a decade back or longer. No idea what city they are in. It is not going to generate a lot of interest in the bowl game in NW Ohio.

Now combine having a game on a Sunday night before a work day against a team without name recognition in the Ohio area - and it does not generate much interest. It will get a lot of viewership since it is likely the only college game that night and is fit nicely between the semi-final games and the national championship game.

Cincinnati is just local interest. Utah state and UTEP are sane size recognition as Arkansas state.
Only Boston College has real name recognition..

The casual fans in nw ohio might not know who Arkansas state is. Sounds like they are about to know more.

We're used to playing 10 win MAC teams...by your theory we should feel let down

Yeh, you're a huge name in college football. You win. Thanks for coming on our board to let us know how good you are and how much tradition you have. Now I'm impressed.
