My 8yo son wants a skateboard for Christmas. I don't want to get generic crap from Target but I also want a beginner's board at an entry level price. Any suggestions?

Cheapskates, 1576 Getwell, has always been my son's go-to place. They are a family-owned shop, and they know their stuff.
I can also ask my son for a recommendation on a brand for a child. He still skateboards in Oregon.
Another source are the super nice kids that skate at the Tobey Park skate park. I am sure if you just showed up, they would be glad to talk to you. All ages skate there, and even some little girls.
Just make sure he gets all the protective gear that he needs, like a helmet and knee pads, et cet. You can take some nasty falls. I would really suggest he go to a skate park and learn to skate the right way.

Thanks-there's a skate park at my YMCA, and I'll check with those kids and have my son learn there. Appreciate the help!

Probably not a great idea for an adult to just show up to a skate park and start talking to random children.

Good luck to your son with that. Just hope he has minimal injuries, if he tries the higher skills moves.

I get your message, but the majority of these skateboarders are teenagers and 20+-year-old guys. They can take care of themselves, trust me. Skateboarders are really very bright usually and street-smart. If you show up with your child, there are usually other parents there, too, with their children who will be glad to talk to you. Not sure how much they are skating now that it's turned cold, though.

Correct-this is part of the YMCA, beside all the little kid soccer fields. Parents all around and wouldn't be creepy like that. Thanks though!

I thought that, too, but the internet indicates they are open. Let me know if you find out otherwise.

Absolutely.
Bring some candy to get the kids to warm up to you.

Don't forget your full length overcoat, it's cold out. A full size van is also great for carrying lots of skateboards.
