Dick Vitale's verbal diarrhea
Some Cardinal fan made a list of everything Dukie V. talked about that didn't involve the Louisville/UConn game: Linky

The guy who made that list probably paid as much attention to the game as Vitale does. He was probably writing every other word down and there is no way that they could have watched the game. Some of what is mentioned in that list also involves UofL or UConn in some way.

Way to miss the point, Dick.

I've heard these things called VCRs, Tivos and ESPNU help you to watch a game after its been played.

Games are certainly nicer to watch when Dukie V is not on the sidelines

I don't care for Vitale either, but I'm going to pose a question to some of you:

How many of you have ever heard Vin Scully call a Dodgers game? If you haven't, take the time to watch a Dodgers telecast if your cable/satellite provider offers a free preview of MLB Extra Innings.

Vin does the games solo, no analyst. Baseball is a different animal, but Vin goes on tangents about the players and other stories all throughout the game.

The last thing I would want is for Vin to stay silent between pitches.

Matt, that's a good point about Scully. I have to say the key though, as you stated, is that baseball is a different animal. The announcers in that sport have to be a storyteller to keep the action going since the game naturally has pauses. Plus, much of his audience is over the radio.

Vitale is calling a sport with fast paced action and the audience also has video. He's just too over the top for most fans to like him.

Absolutely, baseball is the different animal. And Scully has a little bit more charm, I guess, when it comes to the off topic stuff where Vitale's personality doesn't quite have that.

As an FYI, Vin does TV only now and only games west of the Rockies with some exceptions. They simulcast the first three innings on radio, then Charlie Steiner or Rick Monday does the rest of the game on radio. The man is a gem though. He's one of the reasons (Yankee games being the big one) that I subscribe to MLB Extra Innings.

i agree he's over the top and has a mancrush on coack k and the duke program, but i don't mind him, he has a passion for sports, and he's a color commentator not the play by play guy. at least he doesn't come off as a bitter old man with an agenda like corso, more like a likable buffoon.

Here lies the problem. He's supposed to be a color man which means he should highlight the game with some analysis and facts. Instead he dominates any game he does. He talks about random things not related to the action on the floor while the game is in full bore competition and quite often it has to do with the ACC. Its crap.

he's an entertainer, an ok but not horrible color commentator, probably better suited for college gameday, and a pretty good ambassador for college basketball. he's an acc homer and he needs to stfu about duke and mike k. however the gold standard in f#cked up, annoying, remote control throwing commentators will always be pACCker. remember that villanova/unc game, i'd pick vitale's senile ramblings about the world's strongest man competition to packer's agenda-ridden asinine anti-big east venom and his non-subtle obnoxious cheerleading for the ACC any day of the week.
