I think it's just piss poor writing/labeling of the title. Probably should be Special Assistant for Athletics to the President

Watts specifically said that Mackin is actively seeking employment outside of UAB, and that this was simply to allow him to remain employed through that process. The job he'll be doing is temporary anyway.

He quit because he didn't agree with the decision to shut down football. Everyone wanted him to fall on his sword, and he did.

He didn't fall on his sword, he watched as the enemy tried to creep in like rats in the night. They were discovered too late and the battle was lost. Then too cowardly to face his routed forces, he took his sacks of gold and slunk to a gilded cage in shame.

He'll have a cushy executive job in no time, plus a nice nest egg. By the summer he'll be vacationing in NYC or the Bahamas and all this will be an unpleasant memory.

Sometimes a real man will do what is right and not take money to be quiet. There are fewer and fewer real men left in America.
