Memphis basketball's signature has always included a good point guard
I sat last night and tried to remember the last time we didn't have at least a point guard. There have been stretches where we didn't have any inside players, or depth or some other combination of lesser talent.

But I can't remember not having that one point guard.

Right now, Willie Kemp would look like an All-American.

Remember when Anthlon Bell wasn't good enough for Memphis? Enjoyed watching him grow into a solid shooting guard up here.

Amazingly I was thinking the same exact thing...

Even Willies freshmen year we still had Andre Allen who was Memphis through and through.

Even as bad as we are right now, I am so thankful that we wont suck for 15 years like Arkansas has.

You could say that we have never had a point guard this bad, but the truth is right now, we don't have a point guard at all.

As good as we were in 2009, we couldnt find a true PG on that team early. Remember starting Witherspoon as a freshman at the point on the road at Georgetown??

Remember having Maurice Avery join the team as PG after FB season?

Those are the only 2 instances I can recall right now of us not having a good PG. (not saying Avery wasn't good)

Cal had no point guard in Tyreke Evans freshman year. Eventually Cal decided to just play Tyreke and it eventually turned out fine. However, he was sure not a polished point guard to begin.

Remember when Andre Turner was a freshman? He was called "Andre Turnover". It took a couple of years before he became the "little General".

Some of you either have not been Tiger fans long, or you have poorer memories than this old geezer.

The most classic case of us not having PG was Penny's 2cd year when we lost first game in NCAA to Western KY. Can't remember kid's name who played PG but Penny had to play position a lot of time wasting his talent in college that year.

I have to agree with OP. By and large thru the years.. we typically have solid play at PG.

You don't really need a point guard as long as you have a facilitator on offense. Tyreke wasn't a point neither was Penny. But they had the ball. You just need a creator and it looks like this team don't have one.

Penny wasn't a point guard? That's like saying that Magic or the Big O weren't point guards.

He was a point forward basically. He would post up smaller guards when he was with Orlando. Teams hardly do this anymore

Yep, and Marcus Nolan. Finch was a terrible recruiter outside of Memphis (Vaughn from Nashville was his nephew). Hard to imagine a PG not wanting to play on that team. I remember we were close on a couple of good ones…Anthony Goldwire is a name I remember, but couldn't get a decent replacement. Sidney Coles was a 2 or 3 star recruit at best
