Sidney Coles ?

Yep, and Marcus Nolan. Finch was a terrible recruiter outside of Memphis (Vaughn from Nashville was his nephew). Hard to imagine a PG not wanting to play on that team. I remember we were close on a couple of good ones…Anthony Goldwire is a name I remember, but couldn't get a decent replacement. Sidney Coles was a 2 or 3 star recruit at best

Nolan and Finch got into it from what I remember. Finch fell in love with Leon "he makes them in practice" Mitchell. It's a big reason why we fell off in 1994.

That was the year Vaughn went down the first game of the year so Penny played more of an inside game than he would have.

But, Penny was one of the most natural point guards, ever.

If you remember he handled the ball most of the time. Someone said point forward, like Scottie Pippen, but call it what you want, your best chance down the floor was for Penny to have the ball.

We just need the idea of a point guard, that might boost confidence. I just don't understand how you "forget" to recruit a point guard.

Yep. Nolan and Coles split PG duty.

The season could have turned out so different.

Staff missed out on three JUCOs - PG Anthony Goldwire (Houston), PG Covington Cormier (UConn - supposedly we had him in the bag before his visit to Storrs), and SF Aaron Stuart (failed to qualify).

Any of those players make it to school and the lineups are probably different and that fateful play maybe never happens and then no telling.

One thing is certain - that first half, we were absolutely rolling Arkansas on their home court. Hell, Vaughn hit two three pointers if I remember correctly.

Nolan had ability, but was a headcase.

I more concerned about their ability to either properly evaluate talent or properly develop talent or both.

Because at least one of those areas is severely lacking.

Developing players hasn't been one of Pastner's finest qualities

That team did not need him playing point. That's why they lost first game in tourney.

Nolan, Billy Smith, Leon Mitchell, Sidney Coles, and Chris Haynes are the guards on that roster.

I'd take Nolan and Coles right now.

Yep... Chiozza wasn't Mphs good, but good enough for Florida?

Great point! They flat out missed on him and when they tried to get back in on him they couldn't!! He was good enough to play for a coach who's won 2 COUNT 'EM 2 national titles but couldn't play for Josh?? really! That also says something about his talent evaluation, as of late anyhow!
