University of Alabama at Birmingham of Conference USA drops Football
UAB shut down its football program because of cost. UAB is an interesting school. The state medical school is located there and it is known for its graduate programs in the health sciences. They have as many graduate students enrolled as there are undergraduates. The administration felt the money could be best spent elsewhere. They estimate a savings of 49 million dollars over the next five years.

Thank you, Paul "Bear" Bryant Jr. I'm sure many Blazers fans thank you as well.

lets hope the greed form the top conferences does not make this a recurring event.

I don't think it will. This is a unique case with a program that was ripe to get shuttered.

1. They play in a ridiculously large stadium and have a ridiculous overhead for the amount of success the program has had.

2. They have a shared board of regents. Correct me if I'm wrong but California, New York (Buffalo) and Texas would be the only other states where this would cause issue.

3. They are in a state with arguably one of the best football programs in history. You aren't going to divert or gains fans in the face of their success. It's going to be an uphill battle.

Not really a point for my argument but:
4. I don't mind the idea of culling the bloated herd of football. As TV deals cut fan attendance, and concussions/health issues become more of a deterrent the amount of quality football players is going to get tougher. The South is over flowing with FBS teams and for every Florida State there are two Florida Atlantic and Florida International teams dwelling in the cellars of quality.

This was a mercy killing. Up to this point the regents have done everything in their power to ensure the failure of the UAB football program including killing proposed facilities enhancements and vetoing the hiring of Jimbo Fisher as head coach. Better to kill it than keep it in its perpetual state of failure. The NCAA should do the right thing and allow the players to transfer without restriction of any kind. It is bad for the rest of their sports teams because they may have to leave Conf USA now that they don't have a football team.

So who do you think Conf USA fills that open slot with?

I wouldn't call that a mercy killing so much as the abusive regents finally getting what they really wanted all along.
