How long till we're not the only ones?
How much longer till other small programs start to cut their losses with trying to keep up with the power 5 conferences, particularly now that they can basically write their own recruiting rules?

There was a good NYT article linked somewhere that shed some light on the subject.

5 years or less. We are ground breakers. When Watts survives this, and he will unfortunately, college presidents that dislike athletics are going to get bold.

Sooner than you think.

This was a BCS Cartel sanctioned event with UAT sitting at the head of the table.

Other similar schools are terrified by this move.

10 to 15 years.

...but young men at college will always want to play football. It did start as a game after all.

It'll start happening soon, as soon as players start getting paychecks next year or the year after.

There will be dozens of schools that drop football or drop division. Eventually it'll come back as a club sport (even at UAB, if the undergrad side survives) and grow up into a little cottage industry, but today was the college athletics bubble starting to burst.

I think this is a great outlier. People don't readily realize all those enormous P5 paychecks lead to ever bigger G5/FCS paychecks. To the point that even major P5 programs are doing 2 for 1 games to keep costs down. GT is in the middle of a 2 for 1 with Tulane and just scheduled a 2 for 1 with USF. They paychecks to get a 0 and 1 for a G5 is just too big for even GT to afford. Only programs with 100K monster stadium sellout crowds can afford that every year.

ETSU is a prime example of how getting rid of football backfires in both loss of revenue, loss of athletic relevance, and even loss of enrollment academically. Notice ... football is now back at ETSU. And that is with just FCS money with a few P5 paycheck games. I figure just like in hoops that playoff money is going to be ENORMOUS for G5 conferences.

According to the Tuscaloosa NEWS article a couple years ago, 35 states cut per pupil education funding since 2008, but Alabama cut it the most of all states. What has happened to the UAB FB program may happen to those in other states, but since Alabama is a national leader in education cuts, it happened here first. Was that the reason Dr Watts reached the conclusion that it was the only way to protect funding for the medical center? Our medical school must fight the USA medical school for state funding every year.

Here is the NYTimes article about UAB football ending.

Read the comments. UAB is being held as a leader and doing the right thing. For example

"College is supposed to be about learning. There is absolutely no reason to continue to spend millions on an athletic program that provides no real benefit to students. We have totally lost our minds in this country regarding college football. Time for a readjustment to what is important about college."

or

"Thank you, UAB! Your decision means that you understand the priority that academics should have at an institution of higher learning. You are also protecting the long-term health of your students. Congratulations!"

This sucks, but I could be seeing this being a watershed moment for college football. I think a lot will depend how the academic side preforms over the next few years.

The NYT also said there were WMDs in Iraq. #BirdCageLiner
