Agreed, it looks like we will get a B1G opponent in the Orange, which will open the Citrus slot to the ACC. Michigan State is ahead of Mississippi State and there should be no way for that to flip. Michigan State is therefore presumptively the Orange Bowl invitee.
This could change, though, if either Ohio State or Alabama lose in their CCG. Both teams would be almost certainly be rated higher than Michigan State if they were to lose, and Bama would be the highest rated of the three if both Bama and OSU lose. Under the Orange Bowl formula, Bama should be invited under that scenario. However, I believe there is some flexibility that would permit the Orange Bowl to select a Big Ten school even if Bama lost, but the extent of this flexibility has not been revealed.
Ohio State cannot go to the Orange Bowl as Big Ten champion. Under the CFP contract, as conference champion, if they are not invited to the playoff, they must be placed in an Access/Host Bowl. The Orange Bowl has access only to runners up.

Is the CFP committee out to get the ACC? FSU is in the more top heavy division of the ACC and they played OSU, FLA and ND out of conference. They're the reigning champion with the current Heisman trophy winner at QB. What more can FSU do? They've dropped to 4th in the rankings. What if they beat GT and fall to 5th?
And this is right after the ACC swept the SEC in the end of year rivalry games. What else can we do?
It seems to me that the CFP committee is making the statement that no ACC team is worthy of being in the playoff.

Keep in mind who makes up the committee: 1 ACC guy and 11 others (including 2 SEC and 3 Pac-12 - LINK).

Exactly. It's smart business sense for Condi Rice and Pat Haden to over rank Oregon because it sets a positive baseline for a PAC-12 champ, which potentially will benefit USC or Stanford in a future season.
Clearly they can't be a complete outlier voting wise but how much do you want to bet they are not among the minority of FSU advocates on the committee that allegedly have argued to give more weight to the Seminoles' undefeated season and individually vote FSU in the top 2 over the Ducks.

My guess is that there is also a strong bias to place Oregon in the Rose Bowl rather than two eastern teams. Oregon has to be in the top two to "host" the Rose Bowl.

Yes, they want Oregon to anchor the Rose Bowl and Bama to anchor the Sugar. They also probably want to see Bama versus Oregon for the national championship, not TCU and FSU.
Let's face it. 1-4 is fairly meaningless. What really matters is who is 5 or 6 at this point and can the move up if 2, 3, or 4 stumble, because I think Bama is a lock at 11-2

I thnk bama has a good shot at being in the tourney even if they lose on Saturday.
assuming for a second that Missouri wins a close game, FSU, Wisconsin and Baylor win on Saturday.
I see final 4 being: Oregon, FSU, Alabama, Baylor or TCU.
Bama wins but other results the same:
bama,Oregon,FSU, Baylor or TCU

Orange
Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi St.
As explained to me: Miss. State to Orange = no Citrus for ACC. Takes one slot away.

Might save UNC from Detroit but would they get a bowl berth?

This will get a lot less attention, but it is one of two inexplicable flips in the rankings by the CFP committee. How did Mississippi St. pass Michigan St. when need either played? How did three schools pass TCU when TCU did nothing except blow out their opponent? It suggests the weekly ratings are basically meaningless.

agree, I think they got it right in the end, but the couple flips are puzzling.

Pretty much. TCU getting moved in front of FSU the week before turned out to be a bunch of nothing.

At least with TCU you can argue that teams behind them did more to improve their resume. Michigan State and Miss State were both inactive. Ohio State's opponent did more to improve their stock, while Alabama was pretty much what they were known to be. So that flip is inexplicable.
