All seven fans are pissed.....

Imagine how you would feel if UC shut down football. Imagine all the hours you invested. All those emotions. Gone. Like that. And then imagine that they were shut down because a corrupt system allowed an OSU controlled Board of Trustees to rob the University of it's program.

And then imagine having to read ignorant comments like your own.

Quite frankly, and as harsh as this sounds, your post disgusts me.

News flash: uab is shutting down fb for a reason. Lets not act like there are 25k or 35k diehard fans who all of a sudden are losing their team. If there were that many they wouldn't be shutting it down.

There is a reason - the Bama BOT would not adequately fund the program. The Bama BOT fought the program for years regarding additional funding. The Bama BOT decided the meager funds they did provide, would be better used at Bama. Bama BOT terminated the program citing poor financials. You should be happy osu does not have the same arrangement in this state. We would no longer exist if that were the case.

I would try to act sorry to hear that UAB is going the way of the XFLbut I just don't care. There are more than a few other schools that should probably follow suit rather than keeping up the charade.

They averaged 20,000 fans per game this year. And they were 6-6. People care. Just because they are a smaller school doesnt mean they lack a fan base.

And I stand by what I said. Football shouldn't be taken too seriously, but it often is and sometimes you just can't help that. It would devestate me if UC had to shut down under similiar circumstances. I spent my childhood watching our programs. Im sure many UAB fans are the same way. Its a tragedy whats happening at UAB, no doubt about it.

You want to get upset about something make a difference in our country and children's lives. Dont sit here on your high horse and talk about how repulsive someone is on a message board based on a comment regarding a football program.

You are allowed to get upset at more than just awful diseases and other catastrophes. Cancer is bad, world hunger sucks, the Ebola crisis has dominated the news for a good reasons.

In no way am i comparing the fall of UAB football to those things.

But life is large, and there are many things worth making a big deal over. And believe me, when UC lost to Miami, i was the guy on here posting about how everyone needs to calm down and reevaluate their priorities if a game of football was making them upset. So yes, those fans will have to acknowledge that there is more to life - im sure they already know that. The situation still sucks for them, and jokes are fine, but that comment was uncalled for at the time.

By the way, UAB actually averaged 23,139 fans per game this yea, contrary to my earlier post. UC isn't very far off from that number, and we actually field a much more competitive team. Joke about it all you want, but you still have to acknowledge how much this situation still sucks.

Look, if UC's program was still firmly in late 80's or early 90's mode in the current competitive landscape, I would not like it one bit but I would totally understand if the plug got pulled. Things are different now. There is no reason universities should lose millions every year with zero chance of competing while taxing students through higher fees and escalating tuition. The payoff is not there. If you can not compete in today's game, if you can not fund it, and if you can not get the support, why even do this? Just go FCS and have the alumni show up in raccoon skin coats and do the ra-ra shish boom bah thing. There will be more of these in the next two years after the P5 starts paying athletes and loosening up recruiting rules in their favor.

UAB football sucks. It sucks so it's shutting down. Don't give me that HS paranoia about mean old Alabama. UAB is so irrelevant in that state Alabama doesn't give a $@% about them. If UAB was good, if it made money, if it had a following, it wouldn't be in cusa and being shutdown. Really...ef you.

Yes they did...what you are neglecting to tell is that this was double their average from prior years. Hats off to going from 10k/game to 20k/game. But again, it's a charade they have been propping up too long. They needed to put a bullet in this old gal.

RE: UAB ends football program
Let's end this right now...you believe one of two things:

1. UAB football shut down because it was financially irresponsible to continue

or

2. The Alabama board of Trustees executed a personal vendetta against the program

Your opinion probably wont change on what you believe.

I don't mean this in a negative way, but it doesn't surprise me that Rath and Bearcats #1 fall under the first category. There's nothing wrong with believing what is told by the UAB board, because, often times, the underlying issues do not even exist. What does surprise me is #1 telling someone to "get a life". I've seen your posts, and if you want to tell someone else to get a life for being worked up over a football game, then maybe you should also reexamine your own.

The hostility here is pointless.

They may not be all diehards, but lets not act like they don't care.

And yes, they did double their attendance. I fail to see why that diminishes their observed number of fans that are devastated by this.

RE: UAB ends football program
The hard thing is that, fiscally speaking, most of the "G5" programs are in some sort of jeopardy... So, I'm not somehow naïve about the challenges facing UC going forward nor our history.

For FBS, the optimum number of teams is somewhere around 100. Given the current numbers, that means that 25+ schools probably will be weeded out. And lets be frank for a minute... there's really no good reason why whole conferences like the SBC could not drop...en-masse...to the FCS level for FB. Heck, even the MAC, with it's storied history, probably could do quite well on the FCS level. Remember, this is purely a FOOTBALL decision; their other sports could remain at "D-1," and wouldn't miss a beat.

The sad thing is that UAB...for a number of reasons...didn't even have the option of dropping to FCS level. Their BoT wouldn't have allowed it, they didn't have the facilities, etc... Their ONLY option was to either continue at FBS or drop altogether. Likewise, Hawai'i has that hard choice in front of them as well. They cannot really do FB any other way than FBS. The UH program will be next in the "drop" category.

But let's also not be sentimental here: UMass, for example, is trying to do FB on the cheap. They want the $$$ without spending anything on facilities, etc. Some 20-odd programs have moved up from FCS to (now) FBS levels to cash in and not all of them have spent anything substantial on building their programs. Facilities, coaching salaries, promotional activities....a whole lot of schools do not make an investment but want the pay-outs. That does nothing good for college FB. (Hello, Idaho??? Hello, Georgia State???) It sucks for their fans...I get that. But UC made a decision 20 years ago when Nippert was condemned: That was the single moment where UC got off the pot and began to invest. That decision ran over into the coaching decisions where we fired Rick Minter when it became obvious he wasn't going to take us the next step and we gambled on an up-and-coming Mark Dantonio. It also spilled out onto the conference scene when we escaped CUSA to jump into the BE.

If you want to know where UAB and UC's trajectories part, look at that single decision. And it's not all UAB's "fault," but if UC had decided to marginally fix Nippert but to basically hold pat, it might well be UC making that announcement today. But we didn't. And so we have a fighting chance for the future.

I'm sorry for UAB fans and students. But it is what it is.

When someone on the internet makes fun of another program (not even your team) and you state that you are "disgusted" followed by someone's "repulsed", you do sound like a teenage girl. I got a decent laugh out of it though so thanks for the banter.
