Auburn fires defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/auburn-fire...ncaaf.html

After his disastrous 0-12 tenure at Southern Miss, I was shocked when Auburn hired him in the first place. There was tons of talent on the defensive side of the ball for the Tigers. I realize there were some key injuries, but I believe Malzahn has hit on the primary reason Auburn wasn't more successful on defense -- a flawed defensive coordinator. I can't say it was as obvious at Auburn as it was at USM, but there were times when the defense looked to be out of position pre-snap and that was a glaring flaw at USM.

A new DC at Auburn, along with those prized recruits that they have secured, and I believe they will return to the consistently nasty defense we are accustomed to seeing.

Now that I think about it, I wish they had kept Johnson. 03-banghead

Well we have two good ones to choose from.

Do you think they let Harbison have the role by himself or will they hire/promote another co-coordinator? I have kind of looked at him as part of Ellis Johnson. I would have thought they would go in a totally different direction with two new coaches handling linebackers and safeties and a single new coordinator.

I think we hire from outside for the DC position and then everyone on staff will be evaluated. Johnson let a good DL coach go when he came in and it showed up this year. Defense has been a staple at Auburn throughout the years (a brief hiatus under Barfield) and now in the last couple of years. I expect an emphasis to build the D back up. Let's face it we have an offensive guru. If Auburn had gotten a true defensive genius after we let Roof go we might well have won the natty last year and be playing for another this year. The same BTW might be said of A&M.

They were discussing Muschamp to Auburn this morning on the SEC Network. Said there would be no answer for a Malzahn offense and Muschamp defense... I think they are right.

OMG, that might be the scariest duo in the country if that were to come to pass. 04-jawdrop The rest of us can only pray that Muschamp gets another head coaching gig quickly.

There is also talk of him going to Texas A&M. Keep in mind, Muschamp knows the State of Texas very well. He would make The Aggies just as dangerous as he would make Auburn, maybe even more.

Who knows? The smoke is thick in Auburn right now and he did a 2 year stint here as D.C. before going to Texas. He's from South Georgia and his family resides far more in this area. As with most salary packages what he makes as a D.C. will be subtracted from his buyout at Florida so he'll essentially get net the same anywhere he goes unless somebody pays the D.C. more than the Florida Head Coach, which isn't happening anywhere that I know of. We'll see. Auburn has five candidates he's at the top of the list.

If he still feels a strong affinity to Texas then I would think he would have a hard time saying yes to Texas A&M if just as viable of an option is available with Auburn.

RE: Auburn fires defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson
Florida's Will Muschamp flashed back to his days as Texas's defensive coordinator during an appearance at the Polk County Gator Club by taking a shot at Texas A&M's College Station home.

"It will be a very SEC-like atmosphere," Muschamp began. "It's one of the few places in the Big 12 that I would say that about."

But the complimentary tone* didn't continue.

"You ever been to College Station?" Muschamp said. "It'll be the only time you go."

I think A&M is not on his menu; however, money talks and maybe A&M would offer enough for him to get over his dislike of College Station. He was at Auburn twice before, and I think he goes back there barring a good HC or NFL assistant job. That would be a hell of a staff, if it happens.
