CBS/Yahoo: Colorafo State Jim McElwain leading Candidate for the Florida HC Job
From the article:
According to a report from Yahoo's Pat Forde, the Rams coach has "emerged as a leading candidate" for the Florida job. Forde reports that Florida officials have been gathering information on McElwain for the last two weeks, and that his name may be at the top of Florida's list. Forde also writes that Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze is another name on Florida's list, which comes on the heels of a report from Sports Illustrated saying the same thing.
McElwain took over the Colorado State program in 2012. The Rams had gone 3-9 in the three seasons prior to McElwain's arrival, and after going 4-8 with the Rams in his first season, Colorado State is 18-8 the last two seasons, including 10-2 in 2014. The Rams had also been in the hunt for an access bowl bid until losing to Air Force over the weekend ruined their chances at a Mountain West title.

Story update: Jim McElwain and Jeremy Foley talked Saturday night about Florida job. http://yhoo.it/1FH05e2
More smoke in the Florida Coaching Search:
Florida's University Athletic Association has responded to a report that Ole Miss's Hugh Freeze has been offered the Gators coaching job by calling any such report "false."
Following multiple other media reports that Freeze has joined Colorado State's Jim McElwain at the top of athletic director Jeremy Foley's shortlist, SBNation.com's Steven Godfrey -- a reporter with deep Oxford ties -- cited multiple sources in reporting Sunday night that Freeze "is considering an offer to coach at the University of Florida for a base salary in the range of $4.2 to $4.3 million annually."
“We will have no comment on the recent multiple reports," the UAA statement responded Monday, "other than to say that we have made no job offers to anyone and reports claiming that are false.”
Freeze told reporters Saturday after his team's Egg Bowl upset of Mississippi State that he had "not heard from any university other than the one I'm fortunate to be the head coach [of]." The SBNation report claims Ole Miss is offering Freeze an extension that would raise his salary to close to $4 million annually.

I'm all for Florida hiring McElwain or anyone else that will keep them away from Hugh Freeze. Coaches with the ability to coach and recruit and have an extremely high character don't just grow on trees. Ole Miss is fortunate to have him.

"multiple sources" = Freeze's agents and friends?
Someone might be floating rumors about other jobs to get a raise at his current job? Nah. That would never happen.

I'd be a bit nonplussed with this hire if I were a Gator fan.

Not saying that the rumors didn't originate with Freeze's agent, but the extension has been planned for a while that it would get done after the season. It didn't just come up after he became a hot commodity.

I am sure it will be emphasized that he was the OC at Alabama for four years before he went to Colorado State. He was the OC on the 2009 team that put up nearly 500 yards of offense on a very good 2009 Gator team in the SEC CCG.

RE: CBS/Yahoo: Colorafo State Jim McElwain leading Candidate for the Florida HC Job
Latest report is that it's close to being official.
Quote:Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley and Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain are in the latter stages of negotiating a deal that would make McElwain the next Gators head football coach, sources tell Yahoo Sports.
Foley and a contingent of Florida administrators met with McElwain for several hours at his home in Fort Collins, Colo., on Tuesday night to hammer out the deal, sources said.
One notable characteristic of the negotiations is McElwain's reported $7.5 million buyout. Sources tell Yahoo that the buyout is in place and will not be significantly negotiated down.
A formal introduction of McElwain could come in Gainesville, Fla., as early as Wednesday.

No deal with McElwain. Either Florida is holding out for CSU to drop the buyout amount, or they are telling McElwain that he has to pay some of it himself if he wants the Florida job.

CSU should hold out for the entire amount, or drop it $500K and have Florida play their first OOC road game outside of the State of Florida in 25 years in Colorado :)
What is there to gain for CSU to drop the buyout amount?

Nothing. Though, a Florida game in Denver, with CSU keeping all of the proceeds, would be worth a lot more than $500,000. More than $3 million if they sell out the Broncos' stadium. It would be an easier deal to make, and an easier sellout, if it was Nebraska hiring McElwain.

RE: CBS/Yahoo: Colorafo State Jim McElwain leading Candidate for the Florida HC Job
If McElwain ends up being shackled to CSU because of that buyout, he should fire his agent. If he hasn't done that already.

Quote:Colorado State's Jim McElwain wants to be Florida's coach. And the Gators desperately want McElwain as their coach.
There's one huge problem: CSU is not budging on McElwain's $7.5 million buyout, and Florida refuses to pay the entire amount, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy and Chris Low.
"At this point, any potential deal is on hold until there's some sort of resolution with the buyout issue," a source said.
If Colorado State president Tony Frank doesn't agree to a lower buyout, Florida officials are "pessimistic" the deal will get done, sources said.

Interesting. Maybe it's about time a contract actually means something.
