The time has come to split it up
Let the University of Alabama System have the medical side as the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a new University of Birmingham the rest with its own Board of Trustees. Only medical related U of B gets is the Schools of Nursing, Health Professions, and Public Health as part of a College of Health Sciences. One of the first actions by the U of B BOT should then be negotiating to buy the Birmingham School of Law and its new facility on Southside and starting the process for ABA accreditation.

This is essentially what you have in Memphis with the University of Tennessee and the University of Memphis.

It is time!

It's all UAB. We need justice, a fair voice in governing ourselves.

RE: The time has come to split it up
Losing the medical school is not the end of the world. The school itself may be officially affiliated with the UA system, but UAB Hospital, UAB Highlands, and Kirklin Clinic are all UAB entities. Children's hospital and the VA system are completely independent. If UAB truly wanted to separate, it doesn't have to be held back by the school (which is a measly 4% of the UAB Health System budget).

The University of Birmingham would be comprised of:

College of Arts and Sciences
Collat School of Business
School of Education
School of Engineering
College of Health Sciences
School of Nursing
School of Health Professions
School of Public Health
Honors College
Birmingham Law School(?)

Let the power mongers have the rest.

I can support this! I hope it doesn't come to it, but I could support this.

Long as we keep our football team, our C-USA affiliation and get fair and equal representation on that board, that would be fine with me, **** those tuscaloosa toadstools!

I don't know if that would make them happy. your theory is to throw them bones, and maybe if they get a plate full of bones, they'll go away.

if their problem is that they have ridiculously overbuilt, and can't sustain their little empire (which is what I'm reading in a lot of places), they won't be happy with that.

Yeah, but f*** 'em. To paraphrase the 85000 people at the UGA/Tech game yesterday, "To hell with the BoT!"

It would be a Pyrrhic victory because of the huge financial losses.

But, the UA(T)BoT is such a toxic exposure to UAB Undergraduate, it might be the only way it grows long-term.

Ironically, my former department is now part of the School of Medicine.

Honestly the school of Medicine will have a hard time doing research with the other side of the campus to the basic science research before the clinical research can be done. How do I know this? I am a scientist trained at a university (graduate school) similar to UAB in terms of university and medical school in same location.

Pretty sure profs at Memphis collaborate with MDs at U o T Medical School. Harvard Medical School and MIT is another. Most of the research dollars are likely coming from Profs on the University side anyways. Let them have the school of medicine. We will be fine!

Dual membership right (BME in Engineering and Medicine). That is how it is at Vanderbilt

Absolutely. Then we can see what happens when the vampire squid that is the SOM tries to ram its blood funnel up the wazoo of Crimson Tide football in its relentless search for money.

The interests of medicine and a comprehensive university for our City that includes residence living and athletics are countering each other more than ever. It is just not working. It is obvious. Those of us who care are beating our heads against the wall. It is time to split it up. I for one am convinced. The University of Birmingham needs to happen even without the medicine component, of which the UofA System power mongers will never let go.

UAB is the School of Medicine, and the School of Medicine is UAB. They will never be split up, and talk of such is unproductive. UAB grew to this point because of the synergy between the various parts. Breaking apart from the UA System would be bad enough, splitting up the university itself would be the death knell of the whole thing.

Just because something is popular doesn't make it right.

Splitting UAB into two would be a thousand times more disastrous than any move to stop football, or even all athletics. You guys get lathered up so quick and don't even think about the words spewing from your keyboards sometimes.
