Ranking the top G5 candidates for the Access Bowl
Obviously Boise State is currently No. 1.....

But what if they lose in the mwcc game?

Boise would be 9-3.
Colorado State would be 10-2. (two quality losses)
AFA would be 9-3 (and the Commanders Trophy)

Memphis would be 9-3. (two quality losses)
Cincy and UCf (could be 9-3)

NIU could be 11-2 conference champs

Marshall could be 12-1 conference champs

Who you got?

Boise, CSU, and AFA would all be out. Fresno would be the MWC champion.

It would be between
Fresno, Memphis, Cincy, UCF, NIU, and Marshall(oh and La-Lafayette).

My bad. Forgot about Boise, CSU and AFA not being champs.

Colorado State and Air Force wouldn't be eligibile.

If Boise loses, I think Memphis could get it. Of there 3 losses, 2 are to top 11 teams, and the other is by 4 points. Only other team I see in the mix is Marshall.

Sagarin would suggest that a 12-1 Marshall should get it. Frankly, this is not a good year for the non-power conference teams. No real bowl-busters like the Utahs, Boise States, or TCUs of yore stand out.

1. BSU
2. N. Ill if BSU loses
3. Cluster F@$% Between Marshall or AAC team.
4. Honestly Ga Southern should be in the conversation but will not happen. Undefeated in SB. Played NCSU and GT, should have won both. Bad loss is Navy.

RE: Ranking the top G5 candidates for the Access Bowl
My rankings of all possible conf-champs -- with a # signifier showing gap behind the other:
1. Boise State 11-2
2. Marshall 12-1 (3)
3. NIU 11-2 (3.5)
4. Memphis 9-3 (4)
5. UCF 9-3 (5)
5. *GA-Southern 9-3 (5)
7. LA-Tech 9-4 (6)
8. Fresno St 6-6 (8)
9. Bowling Green 7-5 (9.5)
*Can't Go to it anyway

I would love to say NIU over Marshall, but I'm just being honest with myself. NIU has a bit better overall SoS -- but actually 2 notable games both hurt & help them (BLOWN out by Ark, Beat NW). However, their lackluster "Florida State like" wins over almost every team they beat with never dominating a game (besides FCS) -- makes their extra not-good loss keep a bit below Marshall, IMO.
