RE: What did we learn from today's game with UCA?
Since Devonte hasn't played in a game and a half due to an injury, it's difficult to say he's playing too much. At this point in time, I'm assuming the coaches are playing the people that are performing the best, both in practice and the game, and who they feel have the best chance to help the team win. I agree that Josh is an outstanding talent, and he'll play starter minutes when the games really count. Reid is a pretty solid player. He lacks a little quickness on defense, but I'm confident, knowing his history, and from glimpses in a few of the earlier game, he can shoot the rock. And he does some little things well. He rebounds reasonably well, is always around loose balls and is savvy enough to get to them and start the break. From your previous posts, it's obvious you really have a lot of respect for Mariek. He obviously passes the eye test, but so far this year, at least in the coach's eyes, he hasn't done things as well as the others who are getting most of the playing time. If he has what it takes to get more minutes, he'll eventually get them.
And he might be a year early. His time might just be the next couple of seasons. He'll get physically stronger, and when James leaves, he's the obvious player to get first shot at starting. Just my observations. I could be all wrong. It wouldn't be the first time. I'll readily admit J.T. has the real goods. I hadn't seen him enough to know, but the way he's performing, he's earning his playing time. I love Devonte and think he has proven he's a winner, and should also get good playing time. In fact, J.T. has shown me he could be effective at the two guard as well as the point, and there will probably be times when he and Devonte are in the lineup at the same time. I think they did use that combination a little bit in one of the games. This next game should be a really good test for us. In the past, Mo State has pretty well manhandled us in Springfield. Let's see how the guys do this year. If we could win, which is certainly possible, then I think we'll really know we have a good chance this year. And if we lose, well it won't be the end of the world. 80% of all college games are won by the home team. Go Trojans!
