First to 9 wins?
Here's a great scenario that I was pondering earlier this morning, and thought it'd be fun to get everyone else's opinion on it too.

QUESTION: Who will be the first WMU sports team to get to 9 wins?

Football
Currently 8-4, with potential bowl games on Dec. 20 (Potato & Camellia), Dec. 23 (Boca), and Dec. 24 (Bahamas)

Men's Basketball
Currently 4-2 with upcoming games on Nov. 30 (San Diego), Dec. 6 (@NE), Dec. 14 (@Pacific), Dec. 20 (@NW), Dec. 22 (vs. Alabama A&M), Dec. 30 (vs. NH), Jan. 6 (@Akron), Jan. 10 (vs. Buffalo), Jan. 14 (vs. BSU), Jan. 16 (@Toledo)

Hockey
Currently 4-8-1 with upcoming games on Nov. 29 (vs. Union), Dec. 12 (vs. CC), Dec. 13 (vs. CC), Dec. 29 (vs. Colgate), Dec. 30 (vs. Penn St./Robert Morris), Jan. 9 (ND), Jan. 10 (@ND), Jan. 16 (@M-D), Jan. 17 (@M-D)

So... what say you? Football, Men's Basketball, or Hockey?

Football. The way we got raped by Long Beach -- won't be until the Dec 30th at the Earliest until we get 5 more wins in basketball -- if not that, Jan 10th. Hockey? Later.

Unless we're somehow shuffled into one of those January waiting-room bowls, football would get it first (IF we win the bowl; which I give a 60% chance against a comparable opponent).

Earliest Hockey could do it though would be Jan 9th. So football would make-or-break it before then. If it comes down to Bball vs Hockey, I would say hockey.

Fixed it... website hadn't updated the OSU win from last night so I looked right over it. Makes the debate even better though.

Only 30 days off on this one. Not bad.

RE: First to 9 wins?
I think we win our bowl game, unless matched up against Marshal, which would be doable, but tough. I love our hockey program, but I think it is on the decline, and I am quite worried; not just for this year, but beyond. Basketball is on solid ground, even with a fairly pedestrian showing out west, but I think the MAC West will be very good this year. The conference looks pretty solid overall actually. If we don’t win our bowl game, I think basketball gets 9 wins well before hockey does. (Shootout wins don’t count----right?)

the hockey team has 5 wins now, 2 games vs CC at home which should be wins, then colgate (should be a win) and either penn state or robert morris (either should be a win). That's nine by december 30th.

Also the hockey roster is loaded with young talent. I wouldn't be worried too much about next year and beyond. We only lose kessel, kovacs, slubowski and matt stewart after this year. Those are good players but with the way guys like Tiffels, diennes, and laporte are playing I think we'll likely be just fine.

Got to cut Bronco hockey a little slack, considering we're in the SEC West of hockey conferences.

As for the topic - I can't commit to a Millionaire-style "final answer" until I see who we draw in the bowl game. I will say I think football has the best chance. Basketball would have to win out prior to the bowl game, and I don't see that happening. The sporadic December hockey schedule makes it difficult to pick hockey.

RE: First to 9 wins?
Celebrate prematurely a hoops win over a NAIA DIVISION II school all you'd like. While an 'interesting' discussion, it is kind of pointless. Other than football scheduling down once per season, only basketball seems to have trouble finding teams to play. Anybody recall the last time in a regular season game that the hockey team played a DII squad? What I'm getting at is you can't compare schedules and wins and losses btw sports and do it fairly.

And hoops played Aquinas, too. Wonder why we don't hear so much about other MAC hoops teams having trouble scheduling games?

But it is refreshing to be having the discussion about getting to nine wins in any sport these days.

I'd say the hoops team had a great start, wore down some with the travel and hasn't been that impressive yet. Not sure that Hawk has figured out his roles quite yet. We'll get a more accurate pic of where we are once MAC play starts.

The hockey team started slowly, lines evolved, roles emerged and they seem to be getting it together lately. Could be setting up for a good second half. Have lots of ground to make up but could be a thorn in the side of any NCHC team.

Had football won nine, it would be the most impressive. But the story is only beginning for the hoops team right now, and hockey seems to be coming on. The ND series will be huge for momentum purposes, even if Andy doesn't believe in that.

Guilty as charged. Sorry for my little bit of reality to intrude on your free thought exercise.

But think about this. I said it was pointless and then engaged in the pointlessness. At least humor me a bit.

But if I'm going to be judged a buzzkill, can I at least be addressed as Dr. Buzzkill? Dr. Evil certainly sounds more evil than just plain old evil. Perception is everything.

After all, we're not all who we pretend to be around here, right? Isn't Todd really a priest at one of the local churches? DB is a librarian and CD is a used car salesman and Hiller is really one of the wives in the athletic department. Brovol isn't the women's gymnastic coach at an all girls' school? Hoekjeness is really a security guard at a mall and Colin is an animal trainer like Caesar. Kutlaw is a private investigator for the school. Well, there are more stories and that's all they are - before I get sued by people too damned sensitive to laugh things off. I made it all up. It's what Dr. Buzzkill does.

the hockey team has played ranked teams in 13 of the 18 games they've played. That's a crazy tough schedule.
