The issue is that due to ESPN creating the SECN for the SEC, the ACC gets screwed on the deal. By any other measure, the Georgia/GT game should have been on at least an ESPN channel.

First, the SECN is an ESPN Network. They call it the "SEC Network" for propaganda reasons, but it's owned by Walt Disney (80%) and the Hearst Corporation (20%). The SEC owns none of it.

Second, if the SECN has such lousy household penetration that the game was highly limited in who saw it (it doesn't, but if), then that "screwed" the SEC as much as the ACC, so I'm not sure what you are whining about, yet again? 07-coffee3

The ACC and SEC are pretty tight with ESPN

I doubt it. First, the visiting team in any game has nothing to say about where a game is broadcast. Broadcasting is strictly the province of the home team. That's not an SEC - ACC thing, that's nationwide. And anyone can get screwed, even the mighty SEC. E.g., last year, Ole Miss and the SEC was infuriated when Texas put a Texas - Ole Miss game on the Longhorn Network, meaning only about 10% of SEC territory could see it. Tough beans, that's how it went down. Ole Miss had to put together an ad-hoc pay per view network so most of Mississippi could see it.

ESPN tried to put an A&M @UTSA or Texas State game on the LHN a year or two ago. A&M threatened to stay home and play 11 games, ESPN caved.

Other than that, it's the home team's TV rights.

It is the home team's rights BUT they sell those rights. It becomes the Network's choice. ESPN has a big say in kickoff times.

Quo...the point I was getting at is everything is negotiated. I understand the home team drives the network...but my thought was the SEC did this to drive demand to the new channel. The ACC in a few years can clearly reciprocate and put a Tier one game on the channel with an SEC opponent.

I see this more as a Team Disney vs Team Fox play.

Mark, I agree that horse-trading is often involved. But, my understanding is that ESPN calls the shots as to which games to broadcast, not the SEC. The SEC certainly isn't in position to pick which games are on the SECN, as it is ESPN that owns the network not the SEC (despite the name of the network).

Now surely, ESPN and the SEC have various clauses and agreements about ensuring a certain amount of exposure for all SEC teams and things like that, so I don't doubt that ESPN consults with the SEC on this kind of thing, but in the end, it was ESPN that made the call to put the game on the SECN, not the SEC.

Being in Baton Rouge, I got the full-court press from the SEC, ESPN, and cable providers to make sure my tier of cable service included the SECN, and one of the big pitch-points was that unlike say the LHN or BTN, the SECN would air at least some real competitive games. So I just think UGA - GT was an example of that.
