Shaq
Well very much like Tarik, he comes in looks good as a freshman and by the time he is a junior he is coming off bench and basically ineffective....when are we going to stop blaming these players!! I cannot believe we are stuck with this for at least this year and next, let's blame everything and everybody except the real problem.

RE: Shaq
I think most of Shaq's problem is his demeanor. He's just too easy-going out there. He gets used and abused because he's not aggressive. Pastner might not inspire such aggression in his players, but Shaq has always been and likely will always be soft/passive.

RE: Shaq
Shaq doesn't care a lick. He did nothing last night. Never even fought for a single rebound. He was out of position for rebounds and his feet seldom left the floor. Our interior defense was as bad as our rookie guards. I can't believe our big guys were the biggest problem last night.

RE: Shaq
Shaq has not worked himself into a basketball player. He is still an athlete who is playing basketball.

I guess coaching is totally irrelevant to this process?

Not much a coach can do if the player doesn't buy in

RE: Shaq
I've made this analysis for some time now, and was occasionally ridiculed. He isn't motivated at all, and he's worse than when he started. I would compare him to WW or TB, but they were actually never this bad. He's got to be better than this just looking at his physical size, but he's checked out. Barely going through the motions.

So in summary he has regressed and is not motivated.
Hmmm...

Shaq should be on pace to graduate after this year and he could be a grad transfer candidate. Like Tarik, schools would be all over him...

Shaq hasn't been the same since he got ejected against SMU year before last. He was playing tough and physical and made a "get out of here" play and after the review they ejected him.
Since then he's been foul prone, without getting his money's worth on those fouls. To me if you are a big man and you are going to foul, make it count, and not be a touch foul out on the perimeter or reaching in.
Shaq is a great physical specimen, athlete and a great kid, I have just decided he does not have a good basketball IQ.

but our coach has a history of jettisoning those types, right?

Pastner's Recruiting Pitch:
Come to Memphis and I'll help you graduate in three years. Then you can transfer to a top 25 school for 1 year and play for a great coach who will get you to the NBA.

Maybe the player(s) isn't buying in because of the coach.

Always the players. We will have the same thread about Nichols next year. You can bank on it.

No we won't because Nichols will transfer at the end of this season if changes aren't made.
