Definitely want to see how he does. Also want to see how Clemson's offense looks (dabo was on the hot seat before Morris). Wonder how this affects Clemson commits McCloud and Cain.

SMU spending that kind of money on a coach seems like an attempt to make them more attractive for power conference membership. If Morris can create the kind of program that TCU did, then they might be able to pull it off. They're in a great location.

It's worth noting that they've made major moves to raise their profile in basketball as well.

Larry Brown and they have been ranked most for the past two years...making sure they are making themselves attractive enough in case the Big XII makes a move at a later date.

IMO, Clemson should not worry about losing Morris or Swinney. As long as they keep Venables, the other two can be replaced (possibly with better coaches) IMO. Of course, it would cost $$$.

I think the administration at Clemson got religion on spending big money on top assistant coaches. Bowden's biggest shortcoming was hiring bad assistants (e.g. O'Cain, Spence, Hines, Allison) and refusing to part with them. I'm not sure if the administration refused to pay enough to attract better coaches at that time. Maybe Dabo has been more successful in convincing them to pay big money, but they have obviously stepped it up in that area.

At any rate, Swinney has known for a while that Morris would get an offer. Any decent coach has a list of names in his pocket for such an occasion. I will say this - I'll be very disappointed and worried if they promote Jeff Scott. He may turn out to be great, but we should go low risk and hire the best. Clemson is not a program that need to take risks.

I've heard that Morris has had the SMU offer for at least two weeks but wanted to see if Florida had any interest in Dabo before taking it.

One of the links said Morris was waiting to see if Swinney got the Florida job. I'm wondering if Morris might be interested in Florida as well. Even for a 'Texas' guy, Florida is a better gig than SMU.

Coaches from East Carolina always work out great in the ACC right?

Maybe as OC at Florida but not as the Gators' head coach. Florida is one of the most coveted jobs in college football. They can do much better than Clemson's OC.

BTW, I think this is a good hire by SMU and a good career move by Texas native Chad Morris as well.

TCI says that Jeff Scott will be promoted to OC and that he was designated as successor when Morris was hired. Rats.
