Back when my parents lived in Monroe and I lived in Houston, I did the US59-US79-I20 thing, but that was as much as to be able to visit my brother in Shreveport as anything. I did do the I10-LA12-US165 thing occasionally, and I think it's a little shorter in distance that way, but US165 tends to be rather slow-going for much of its way, so I tended to go the former way.
