Attendance Saturday?
@JMUTickets: @jmusuperfan right now we're at a solid 9,000 tickets. Really need those students to show up in BIG numbers!

... That's around 11:30 PM on 11/25. I know the kids are out, but what's a reasonable goal for this Saturday? 9,000 seems really low if this were then, but of course it's not. 20,000 reasonable to expect?

I originally thought 17k, but it's now going to be closer to 15k. That's at best 1k students and 2k Liberty fans. I think they won't bring as much as we would've hoped.
Don't underestimate a JMU fans ability to use almost anything, especially a holiday, as an excuse.

I don't think it's an excuse. it's the reality of the situation. you can't plan this in advance because you don't know. and it's a holiday weekend.

it is not exclusive to JMU. It happens everywhere. Even App State would get 30,000 in the regular season and half that in the playoffs during their heyday. it is what it is.

RE: Attendance Saturday?
that infamous 2007 playoff game between JMU-ASU?

attendance: 14,040

http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=273282026

2 weeks before the holiday against Western Carolina?

attendance: 27,977

http://espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=273142026

yes, I know very well schools under report playoff games. But not 13,000 less

RE: Attendance Saturday?
Having the first round the weekend of Thanksgiving is an attendance killer. As Duke Dawg noted you can not really plan for it and Holiday plans for that
weekend are usually made months or more in advance so it is difficult to get them changed to attend without risking injury to life and limb.
(Honey, we are going to have to cut our visit to your parents short since the Dukes are home on Saturday!! The LOOK followed by a very loud silence!!)

Most of us really don't want to sleep on the couch or in the doghouse!!

So while I am hoping for a nice crowd I would think 15K or so in that area would be reasonable. Wofford game in 2008 on the same weekend had an announced crowd of 13500 or so and that was a bit generous as I recall. The two later games had much better crowds. Biggest wildcards are how many students decide to come back early and how many fans the Flames drag up with them. One thing that may help is the ongoing ticket donation push which seems to be working well.

Go Dukes!!

Rootin!

Brian

RE: Attendance Saturday?
Remember when a few people thought this would surely sell out? Yeah... They forgot it was Thanksgiving week and the mother-in-law wouldn't let them leave even 48 hours later.

I wonder if that's total tickets, including Liberty, student, and donation tickets?

exactly what i was going to say. i remember even Montana having issues with attendance this weekend of the playoffs. it happens.

you guys know more than me about "reported" vs. "actual" attendance.... i know nothing about that stuff. as far as "butts in the seats", i'd say 12-14K total.

RE: Attendance Saturday?
Semi-OT for this thread, but with this season and last being almost identical in attendance, it appears that the emphasis on earlier start times didn't have any effect. I know one season isn't a large enough sample size.
I think winning helps more than the time of day. Weather also isn't part of the argument, both seasons saw many rain games or cold games.

RE: Attendance Saturday?
I'm trying to gauge how much would need to be sold just to break even with our costs.

Rumored $150k Bid + Previously Stated $160k Game Day Operations = $310k Total Cost
I'm sure there are other costs, and there's revenue from Merchandise Sales/Bookstore, Cash Parking Lots and Concessions, but I don't have those figures.

We are throwing around the average ticket cost of $25, which I think sounds fair. 310,000/25 = 12,400
We need to sell 12,400 tickets. If we're at 10k and we're not sure if that includes Liberty ticket office sales... We should be okay.

Correct me if i'm wrong on that minimum ticket cost.
I'm sure there are other costs, and there's revenue from Merchandise Sales/Bookstore, Cash Parking Lots and Concessions, but I don't have those figures.

We are throwing around the average ticket cost of $25, which I think sounds fair. 335,000/25 = 13,400
We need to sell 13,400 non-student tickets. If we're at 10k and we're not sure if that includes Liberty ticket office sales... We should be okay.

You are low on the $150,000 bid. Way low.

04-jawdrop Wow... when they said aggressive, I was thinking 60-80k range. Unless someone in the know wants to throw out the real figure, then this guessing game is pointless until we see the FOIA.

If that is the case, then where do you suppose the 3rd and 4th round bids are?

Up in the stratosphere with this bid or back down in the $100K range?
