I know we won't sell out, but I hope our attendance is far higher than we're projecting.

I still say it will be at 18K+. I think there will be quite a few walk ups and I think we see 2500 students.

The fact our marketing director estimates 13-15k tells me that is what will be reported to the NCAA. Expect larger than that number.

Just to go along with this, I just looked at the JMU ticketing website. The Godwin side has no tickets available thanks to Liberty, students, season ticket holders, and giveaways (assuming that's where they'll put the donated tickets). The new stands have a handful of sections that have large numbers of tickets available (mainly just along the scoreboard side and the collar). And then the endzone still has a ton of tickets left. Overall I can see that adding up to 10k tickets (or 40% of the stands) with tickets still available.

RE: Attendance Saturday?
13,040...

Considering we donated about 500 tickets (or so someone said on the earlier this week) and Liberty EASILY brought about 2,000 people...

10,500 JMU fans showed up to cheer on one of the more exciting JMU teams in years for the first ever playoff game in newly expanded Bridgeforth. I understand that it was a holiday weekend, cold, etc., but this is something that embarrasses me as a JMU fan. I brought two people to the game that had never been to a JMU game and never been to any FCS football game. They mocked the crowd the whole time for what I had billed as one of the bigger games ever at JMU.

It is FCS. It doesn't draw the casual fan. Neve has, and never will.

It sucked. But it won't change for a game on thanksgiving weekend.

RE: Attendance Saturday?
Thanksgiving weekend is a lame excuse if you have a real fanbase. Montana has no issues year after year packing their house for the playoffs. UVA/Tech wasn't even on the same day. I really expected a lot more from both teams' fanbases for this one, yet I wasn't overly surprised. Ohio St/Mich and other major FBS rivalries have had years of building tradition. Without making the playoffs regularly, annually, it is hard for 25K to PLAN on being there year after year. Still, you'd like to think that when you expect a tough game with an in-state rival, the fans would come out in droves. C'est la vie!

Comparing our fan base to any of the above is laughable.

When any of those programs were our age, check the attendance numbers.

It takes time.

And it takes more than FCS.

We mock the weaker FBS schools but App State hosted a 1-10 Idaho team today in a game that had no regional significance, no conference championship on the line, against one of the worst teams in all FBS, and also on Thanksgiving break with no students in session...

...and they still got 20,000 people to the game.

The thing that people underestimate is the difficulty in starting from zero and selling that many tickets on short notice. Ap St and all those other FBS games referred to above had 90% of those seats sold....6 months ago. It's far more challenging for an FCS program over a holiday weekend.

Montana has some of the most loyal FCS fans in the country and they only had 14,000 today according to the box score.

JMU did a great job promoting this game. I wish attendance was higher, but some of the attendance expectations over the last week or so on here just weren't realistic.

ODU played three home playoff games while FCS. All three were sold out and all three had completely full stadiums.

The ODU/NSU playoff in 2011 was Thanksgiving weekend.

Atypical situation having two teams from the same city playing each other. ...as well as a huge percent of ODU and Norfolk St students and alums who live nearby. But thanks for letting us know.

You have the largest metro area in Va in your backyard.

And pointing to a game with 2 schools less than 20 miles from one another? What does that prove?

And you have no dog in this game. You're trolling, like always. Only ODU fans would keep you as a mod.

That game didn't sellout because of NSU fans and there were plenty of students, alumni, and fans within a short 2 hour drive today to give us a crowd of 20,000.

I hate ODU and their dilapidated high school stadium but he's right.

Just over 10,000 JMU fans showed up today and anyway you spin that, its disappointing.

RE: Attendance Saturday?
I was very disappointed in the crowd for the game yesterday. While I understand the weekend, students being away etc still I think we should have done much better than the announced attendance of 13040 (cough cough). We have all been clamoring for a home playoff game for years, the Admin did what it had to do to get us one and we get a crowd like we did? Very disappointed in JMU Nation.

Go Dukes!!

This only proves that it probably is not in the best interest of an FCS school to win the bid for a 1st round home game.

Clarification needed. Team/fan best interest or institution financial best interest?

Definitely financial. Home game always a plus for team and the passionate fans that show up no matter the circumstance.

In my opinion that is very probably correct. I see no upside to JMU's "winning" a bid to host a game two days after Thanksgiving, while the students are out, which we will have only six days to promote. We saw the results yesterday. Worst attendance in several years, and the program almost certainly lost money. Oh, and we lost the game, to boot. I certainly would have felt better about it if we'd played that game at Liberty.

Don't feel too sad
UR had just over 4100 in a metro area with over 1 mill population
Laughable !

Just watched some of the replay on ESPN3...

Thank God (literally) for the Liberty fans showing up like they did. Without their presence in the stands our stadium would have looked completely empty during the crowd shots. For once, shooting towards the Godwin side appears to have been beneficial because the crowd definitely looked bigger on TV than in person.
