What is normal? We have 17 and we still have to add 2 women's sports to meet Title IX.
Do we have to ADD 2 women's sports or can we get to the number some other way?
I have said it since the day football was announced. CAAZone, Monarch Nation and now here, I believe that men's team/teams will be cut to help us achieve Title IX compliance.
I think the combo of delays in adding the 2 sports and some numbers 9100% accurate or not) paints a picture that eliminating teams might be the option WS is looking for.
Swimming, tennis, and golf are the three that come to mind. As a former ODU swimmer, I jope it doesn't happen and this is PURE SPECULATION but there are some signs that point this way.
Uhh... NinerNational is clearly talking about Charlotte, not ODU

I highly doubt that tennis will be close to the chopping block. One, the multi-million $$ Folkes-Stevens center, and two, with both men & women, that's only 12-15 spots.

You don't have to have the exact number of sports. You can satisfy Prong 2 of Title IX by continuing to add sports for the "underrepresented" gender every x-number of years. Liberty added 3 women's sports too fast, were in compliance with Prong 2, then realized they weren't going to add any more women's sports and "opted" to comply with Prong 1 by cutting the recently re-introduced wrestling program. They would have eventually "timed out" of Prong 2. Add them in 5-6 year increments, not all at once. It ended up costing the school its wrestling program.
As its applied to college sports, Title IX can be worked right and it can be worked wrong. There's absolutely no reason to remove an athletic opportunity this day and age. Selective excellence is a crap motto. The SEC could be giving tons more students an opportunity to compete in sports ... and they have the money to put those teams on the field and not even bat an eye financially.
I'll just stop here before I end up going on a rant about the pisspoor decisions and "reasons" I've heard for cutting teams in the past -- this includes you, JMU.
