There are probably 50-60 high school leagues in this country that Savannah State would likely struggle to finish .500 in. Their athletic program is horrible. They have been I-AA/FCS since 2002 and have a grand total of 18 wins in that time frame. They were mediocre in DII and only moved up for March Madness money.
While Savannah St's overall athletic program should have never moved to D1, the comparison to high school leagues is 100% hyperbole when we're talking basketball.
The Tigers are clearly not good, but they aren't even the very bottom of D1. They were 13-19 last season (Ken Pom #277 out of #351). They were picked to finish 7th this year in the 13 team MEAC.
Combine a bottom 100 team with UofL's outstanding defense and you get absolute mismatches. The Cards have been a KenPom top 4 defense for four straight seasons and I don't think this year will be any different. If you don't hit shots against Louisville it can get ugly quick. Ask Rutgers, who lost 92-31 in March in the AAC tournament.
Savannah St actually was 2-2 coming into the game. They've already beaten normally respectable Cleveland St and they beat Winthrop.
I know score comparisons can get goofy, but for entertainment purposes let's look at 3 scores from the last week of basketball.
Louisville 87 - Savannah St 26
Savannah St 59 - Winthrop 58
Winthrop 77 - Clemson 74
