Buddy, do tell what coach we have had before that has used those same words? Like no one I can remember.

So far, so good, IMO, but not because he is saying the right things, but because, so far, it seems as if he is doing the right things in the right way.

He is BOTH talking the talk AND walking the walk. What the coach says publically and how he says it may not mean much to you and some others, but to many of us it is VERY important and reflects more than simply "coach speak". It reflects not only accountability, but a quest for never being satisfied and always striving higher.

RE: Coachspeak
This made me laugh from the La Tech Board about Skip Holtz and Coachspeak after he called UAB a trap game...Some familiar lines...

Holtz is the guru of nebulous "coach speak". Nothing to see here...

This is a trap game,
Today's loss was a wakeup call that we are a work in progress and we still have a lot to work on,
We're still trying to figure out exactly who we are,
_______ is a well-coached, up-and-coming team,
They are the best-kept secret in the country,
We're just going to take it one game at a time,
It is always just good to get a win,...

And they're always "competing".

And they have a really good RB in ______ and some good Wrs.

I can't believe you left off "We're a work in progress."

Well, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. His steps so far seem pretty good to me, but I am not ready to say he is walking the walk until I have seen it walked a little farther than three games with a 1-2 record. Get back to me in 2017.

That was an inside joke, for some reason known only to him, OldOwl always misspells "coach" as "couch" in his posts. Kind of like how nightowl24 doesn't seem to believe in capital letters.

what? i always thought the first thing he did when he got a new computer was remove the shift and caps lock keys... i had assumed his handwriting must be filled with the same flamboyant capital letters that you'd find in the declaration of independence and us constitution.

RE: Coachspeak
The first word that came to my mind reading the post game quotes was entrepreneur. It projects a relentless but confident pursuit of a clear objective using a distinctive organizational approach.

I don't mean that in any pejorative way.

Rhoades seems to be coaching in a way consistent with the knowledge that if he can get to 25 wins and the NCAA tournament, he will become wealthy beyond his dreams when TAMU or LSU or (fill in the blank) hires him.

I am a libertarian, and believe in my bones that (with rare exceptions) entrepreneurs who become wealthy create a lot more value for their customers than they do for themselves. And so it will be with Rice if Rhoades ever gets to the point where he can command $3 million per year from a P-5 team.

the corollary is that when he looked at Rice, the word that came to mind was opportunity. the facility, the campus, the Houston recruiting pool, the proven formula of mid majors reaching elite status with 4 year players of very good but only rarely NBA talent level all spelled opportunity.

I hope he gets very rich, because if he does, we will have seen something here not seen ever in the history of Rice.

PS--if the economics of college baseball were similar to men's basketball, there is no doubt in my mind Wayne Graham would be making $7 million per year.

Pretty spot on about Rice being a very attractive stepping stone, especially in a sport like basketball, where a single recruiting class can literally turn around a program.

If someone can take a bottom-feeder like Rice, turn it in to an NCAA Cinderella, and use that initial success to create a positive feed-back loop, you will be hired away to a bigger NCAA school or the NBA. And I think most of us have gone on record that it is much easier to orchestrate a turn around basketball rather than football (and potentially any other sport).

I'm honestly fine with Rhoades, or any coach for that matter, using Rice as a stepping stone, so long as when they leave, they do not do it in such a way that it is obviously malicious nor detrimental to the program.
