Game #5: Gardner Webb
Anyone have any scouting info? They beat Clemson and CofC and played LSU close. Need to be ready for this one.

This is a tough out. Very balanced club with 4 players avg +14ppg and if they watched last night's game they got the blue print to beat the Monarchs. We just need to hit shots and get some output from more than two players.

Did Seton Hall provide the blueprint to beat them? Didn't watch that game, but it was lopsided.

RE: Game #5: Gardner Webb
Well I've always had the mindset that to win the 3rd place game isn't really the worst thing in the world. In my opinion, I'd rather win the 3rd place game than lose the Championship game. No one wants to be 2nd, and we at least leave the tournament with a win going into the VCU game 4-1 is still a damn good record to have for the first 5 games if we win tongith. I think last night, Illinois state just came to play. Their length and size in that zone was incredible and even when we had shots we just couldn't get them to go down. This Gardner Webb team seems to be able to score. They're in the top 100 in the category. They don't have a lot of height. Their tallest guy who is 6-10 doesn't even play. I think at least we have that going. Every team has nights when shots just don't fall. Hell, I don't remember the last time Kentucky, Duke, Florida, UConn, etc have went undefeated. They have wtf games sometimes too. That game is over. It's about what you do after. Lets go beat these bulldogs!

That's a new perspective, better 3rd than 2nd.

I've just always felt 2nd as being a losing place. It sounded okay in my mind. haha

I just hope Gardner Webb never practices the 1-3-1 defense. this reminds me of the triple option.

RE: Game #5: Gardner Webb
This is a must win in my mind. Win it and we can still build a nice resume and can probably afford to lose to either VCU or Lesser GSU. I think if we can go into CUSA play with 2 losses, we'll be in decent shape to at least get near the bubble. That Illinois State team looked very good. Hopefully they make some noise in the MVC this year and the loss last night doesn't turn out to be a bad one. They are picked to finish 5th, but that didn't look like a mid-major 5th place team.

I don't think it was the 1-3-1 in itself as much as it was the fact it was extended all the way to half court so we didn't really get a chance to set up any plays. We had no answer.

Really against the 1-3-1 halfcourt you don't set up plays. You swing the ball around, don't dribble it, until you wear the defense down and get a good shot. You got to be really patient and we were not patient at all. This defense will be effective against us as long as we handle the ball the way we did against it.

Thanks, I am not an Xs and Os guy so I'll take your word. All I know is we were rattled and that never changed after we got the turnovers under control.

RE: Game #5: Gardner Webb
Ill State had a 1-3-1 that I've personally never seen before. Every 1-3-1 I've ever seen was either one that traps in the corners or one that simply keeps its shape.

Theirs was a matchup zone with the point and high post players switching on every pass or drive. A really genius concept, there was always a ISU player diving down on the high post entry. It only worked because they had a 6'11 shot blocker in the paint.

GW has two post players that Seton Hall had to double the entire game, they are no pushovers.

And when you can't make a fast, sharp pass you get picked or pressure in your face. The passes all night against it were indecisive and slow while waiting for the ball to come to them. Def a game to watch and learn from.

RE: Game #5: Gardner Webb
The good news is they are really the only post players. They are a lot like us from last year.

Jerome Hill is a smaller, quicker, better offensive Richard Ross (6-5 210). It will be fun to watch these two go at it. If Ross plays effective defense on him, it will be huge. Nelson is 6-7 230 and we have the bodies to rotate on him. The problem for them is there only other "big man" is 6-5 200 pound Adonis Burbage.

They have a 6-8 220 pound senior that plays 7 mins a game and a 6-6 235 pound junior that plays 2

Respect, the high school team I was on used this defense for 2 years straight, never veared from it. and I have seen first had what it can do to a team that isn't ready for it. Illinois State played it perfectly. I think we stole it from UCLA back in the early 70's.

Depth could be a concern for them, especially at the pace they play. If we can get one of those 2 big guys in foul trouble, we should have success.

RE: Game #5: Gardner Webb
Good luck vs. GW tonight guys. Honestly, Illinois State was pretty unproven up to last night. We couldn't shoot a lick vs. Utah State at home, and our second half DEF was horrible.

Coach Muller made a few adjustments to the starting lineup putting in Devon Akoon-Purcell (#44) who gets after it on both ends. Last year we were a team playing 4 guards, noone really over 6'4" except our starting center Reggie Lynch.

This year we threw 6'7" Akoon-Purcell, 6'"8 Deontae Hawkins into the mix with 6'10" Reggie Lynch. Throw in our guards who love to get at in the defensive end and who on paper say they're 6'3" (Knight) and 6'1" (Paris Lee) and we're no longer the midgets we were last year.

Also having a couple of bigs off the bench helped 6'9" John Jones (#10), 6' 9" Will Ransom (#45), 6'7 " Mikyle McIntosh (#11) helps when Lynch gets in foul trouble. Last year we had no help once Lynch went out and Jones was injured.

As for the DEF, it's supposed to be an extended 2-3, but it looks more like an amoeba defense. It morphs into a 3-2 at times, a 1-3-1 when the ball swings to the corners, I saw a little 2-1-2 zone in there. The half court trap varied between a 2-2-1 and a 1-2-2 at times. I was confused watching it, so I can't imaging trying to attack that thing last night.

We threw a lot of junk defense at you guys, not sure you'll see anything like that or possibly many teams with that much length. Good luck in the C-USA and tonight.
