CBSSN analyst says AAC champ should get the G5 slot
I was still watching UC-UConn, even with UC up 41-0, b/c I got interested in reading online, and just left the same channel on. Glad I did now.

It's on CBSSN. Dave Ryan is doing play-by-play, and Cory Chavous is the color analyst. Due to the blowout, they had a long conversation about the G5 race for the access bowl.

They both said that they thought Marshall had the inside track, simply b/c they were undefeated. However, Chavous said he didn't think Marshall had the best G5 team. He said they struggled with UAB today, and easily could have lost. He also mentioned their weak schedule.

He said he thinks that Boise State and Colorado State are both better than Marshall, and that if Utah State slipped into the MWC title, they were better, too. He then said that he thought the AAC champ, whichever one it turns out to be, is better than all of the others. Their graphic showed Memphis, Cincinnati and UCF.

He said Memphis or Cincinnati could beat any other G5 team. He said UC is playing so well, even though they lost to Memphis earlier, 41-14, that in a rematch, they might be able to win. But he said the G5 consideration has to go to Memphis, b/c they soundly beat Cincinnati, and there is no CCG in the American this year.

Chavous said, of the people in the business that he talks to, the general consensus is the AAC is the best G5 conference, by a good amount.

He also said that Memphis deserves serious consideration for the G5 slot, b/c they are the only G5 team this season who played a highly ranked P5 team, UCLA, to a standstill, and had a legit chance to win late.

I wasn't recording the game, so I couldn't play it back and nail the quotes, so it's possible I got a few words wrong, but I know I got the gist of it.

If anybody else here heard that conversation, please feel free to add to or edit my recap. I just had to do it by memory right after I heard it. Thanks.

At the end of the game, they showed the updated AAC standings, with Memphis, UC and UCF at the top. Chavous said that any of those 3 teams would be a good representative for the G5 in the New Year's Day bowl game.

Chavous knows what he's talking about when it comes to football. He does a NFL mock draft that most NFL people consider the best of all of them. Played in the NFL and at Vandy.

Sounds great but the Mountain West has two teams currently either ranked (CSU) or receiving votes (Boise) in the coaches poll. The AAC has only Cincy. It will interesting to see if the AAC picks up more votes this week. It's possible.

BTW, the only team in the AAC who has a winning record OOC is ECU. Just saying.

None of that matters. All this stuff is debatable. I'm simply passing along what one professional said was his opinion, b/c it was favorable to the AAC, and I had not heard anybody in the business say that publicly before.

BTW, the polls you mention don't mean anything. Only the CFP poll counts, and it comes out Tuesday night. And unless a G5 team is ranked, we won't have any clue where any of the teams stand for the G5 slot.

Memphis and UC are playing really well. OOC we lost at Ole Miss, UCLA, Ohio State and Miami Fl. Tough road schedule.

That's very well written TripleA 04-cheers... I was listening to the access slot conversation too and that's exactly what it was said of the top 3 AAC programs.

Unfortunately the guys over at CBS don't give the others much credit.

Thinking out loud here... The AAC isn't having a good year and the CBS guys already talk/think very highly of this league now, wonder what will be said when the AAC has a 1 - 2 loss team next year.

So an analyst calling an AAC game was speaking well of the conference being represented by the two teams on the field? Interesting. Wonder what he would say if he was calling the CSU Air Force game next week?

I've defended Marshall a lot this year and even said you should be ranked...but you gotta know that the odds of you being undefeated in the AAC this year would be slim. You would be competing at the top with a few of us but you wouldn't be undefeated...

He would tell Marshall to actually play someone. Marshall would not be undefeated in the AAC or the MWC. Doesn't mean you couldn't compete but you wouldn't be undefeated.

I basically just said the same thing. I could have saved myself the time.

The two teams on the field? Cincinnati was playing UConn. Try to keep up.

Well Joey Galloway and Beth Mowan did the Boise State v. Wyoming game. They began looking at the G5 representatives resumes and when they got to a certain school from CUSA; Galloway said their schedule was not good enough to warrant inclusion. So now you have heard it from an ESPN crew doing a MWC game.

What was your first clue? The fact the they barely beat 3-8 FAU or the fact that they needed a miracle to beat UAB?

Seriously, CUSA and the Sun Belt are about dead even.

Corey Chavous's scouting/mock draft site is draftnasty.com. It's a cool site and I saw that Carden was one of his players if the week during OOC play.

Btw, he projected Manziel would be drafted 27th and people laughed. His player insite is well respected by NFL people.

That last poll was taken prior to word getting out that the playoff committee was considering Memphis, and before fuente made a public short list for the Florida game. It will be interesting to see how many votes Memphis gets after all that is known and another solid win.
