In his final few seasons at WVU, it was hard to let go for him and the fans. He did so much for WVU, just like Beamer has done for VT.

yeah you have got to really wonder if this is it for Beamer.

I agree with this. Nehlen knew when it was time to step down, and he did so honorably. Will Beamer do the same to VT (and himself)? I hate seeing these old-timers dampen their legacies.

Beamer needs to go, but I don't see him stepping down so VT will probably be forced to make the tough decision.

1. Yesterday game was horrific to watch on so many levels.
2. He should get one more year before the heat is turned up...if Bowden wasn't safe then neither should Beamer.

People were saying the same thing about JoePa in 2004. His W-L records from 2000-2004:

2000: 5-7
2001: 5-6
2002: 9-4 (lost Capital One Bowl to Auburn)
2003: 3-9
2004: 4-7

That's straight up ugly. That would get you fired at almost any school in the country. But they stuck with him, and you know how he did in the next 5 years?

2005: 11-1 (won Orange Bowl, finished #3 in both polls)
2006: 9-4 (won Outback Bowl, finished #24)
2007: 9-4 (won Alamo Bowl, finished #25)
2008: 11-2 (lost in Rose Bowl, finished #8)
2009: 11-2 (won Capital One Bowl, finished #8)

Also, a lot of schools have fared very poorly when forcing out a legendary coach. Look at who followed Phil Fulmer at Tennessee, Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, and Gene Stallings at Alabama. The coach doesn't even have to be a legend for the new coach to underperform; don't you think Michigan fans are wishing they'd never forced out Lloyd Carr? And those places all have larger fanbases and more money to throw at a new coach than Virginia Tech.

Let's just say that I'm skeptical that Beamer's replacement will do any better than he can over the next few years.

The situation is akin to Bowden at FSU as well. Beemer has not been the same since his wife was injured in a serious accident several years ago. He wont be forced out, and has a plugged in job waiting at the University after he retires from coaching. The problem now is that other programs will use his age against him and UVa in particular has been adept at describing Blacksburg as a place that folks from Southeastern Va would not like.

I didn't know about that. That changes my opinion.

Usually a man doesn't change very much after he comes of age. That's why I'm not usually in favor of forcing out a proven winner just because he has a couple bad seasons.

But going through traumatic family situations can change how a man treats his work. And it can go either way. My doctor had a daughter who died suddenly. He used to be a fun, well-balanced guy, but after the death he buried himself in his work. He'd spend 12, 14 hours a day at the office just to avoid the pain.

Lloyd Carr was terrible. Ohio St fans were the saddest to see him leave. You can't ignore the changing demographics of Michigan when assessing their situation.

Paterno had long passed his prime and it was a matter of finding suitable coordinators. Despite the ugly circumstances, Sandusky was a very good D-coordinator, and it was his departure that hurt PSU for the stretch you mention.
