Slappies: Fleck will leave, and CMU football will be awesome again

Didn't take long for the Slappy mentality to rear it's head.

Fleck, the former boat rowing dunderhead, is now apparently a crown jewel.

One Slappy claiming its the first time they've won in sixty years and when the boat rower leaves after this season the stars will be back in alignment for their beloved Chips.

Couple of corrections
We've had 15 winning seasons in the last 25 years. More than the Chips have had.

If Fleck leaves, they would likely hire either OC or DC. They would still be setting on a chit load of young proven talent.

CMU loses every explosive player they have, on both sides of the ball. They lose a boatload of starters. Enos has not recruited well in some time.

Chippies are great at predicting something and then acting as if it is true.

I'll make this prediction. CMU will having a winning season in basketball before they have another winning season in football, and they'll still both finish in the middle of the pack. 05-stirthepot

We've renamed it the woodshed in honor of what the team did today to CMu.

I get annoyed at the Chip propaganda/mythology that they somehow own this rivalry. They like to play off the fact that we've beaten them more often by claiming we dominated them before they were D-I while, at the same time, emphasizing the greatness of all of their wins from the '70s and '80s (all while ignoring that their run of dominance also happened a long, long time ago).

After our win today, this series is all even at 10-10 over the past 20 years. Any non-delusional Chip fan has to be concerned when looking at how both programs are currently trending and about how this series may play out over the next five years.

I didn't realize that we've been that even over a 20 year span...... You are right the next 5 years with the excellent talent here and the new recruits coming in will tip the scale in WMUs favor

You never know how the future will play out, but at this point you have to like our chances going forward in the near future.

IMO part of the reason the 20-year-span record is surprising to many of us is because of some of the tough ways we've lost over that span, compared to how/when we've won. Consider this:

CMU wins in the past 20 years:
- 1996: Comfortable CMU win.
- 1998: Their kicker flutters a late FG over the bar and we lose by two. Narrow CMU win.
- 2000: Has been beaten to death here. 03-puke Enough said. Narrow CMU win.
- 2004: We fumble late in regulation and CMU wins in OT. Narrow CMU win.
- 2006: CMU beats us down in the second half in the cold pouring rain. CMU wins big.
- 2007: Arguably the most controversial loss in Bronco history. Narrow CMU win.
- 2008: Hiller puts up big numbers, but we can't stop their backup QB on third-and-long all day. Comfortable CMU win.
- 2009: We hang for a while before LeFevour pulls away. Comfortable CMU win.
- 2010: We fumble late in regulation going in for the winning score. Narrow CMU win.
- 2013: We lose by five despite five CMU turnovers. Narrow CMU win.

Now, compare those game results to this:

WMU wins in the past 20 years:
- 1995: Comfortable WMU win.
- 1997: CMU jumps on top early, but we storm back. Comfortable WMU win.
- 1999: Blowout city in front of the rivalry's biggest crowd. WMU wins big.
- 2001: We win on a last-second FG. Narrow WMU win.
- 2002: First win in Mt. Pleasant in a long time - and it wasn't close. WMU wins big.
- 2003: Comfortable WMU win.
- 2005: CMU jumps on top early. We storm back and hang on late. Narrow WMU win.
- 2011: Five years of payback. WMU wins big.
- 2012: We rally in the fourth quarter to win by multipe scores. Comfortable WMU win.
- 2014: CMU jumps on top early, but we storm back. Comfortable WMU win.

Feel free to disagree with my assessments of each game - for example, "comfortable" for yesterday's game may not sound right, but history will show that we led the whole second half and won by multiple scores.

IMO, though, over 20 years, that adds up to:

CMU: 1 big win, 3 comfortable wins, 6 narrow wins
WMU: 3 big wins, 5 comfortable wins, 2 narrow wins

Over those 20 years, CMU has had far more dramatic wins. They've also beaten us in many of our stronger years during that time (2000, 2006, 2008, 2009) - not to mention that 2000 has been seared into our memories. IMO these are big reasons why the myth of CMU having the upper hand against us has existed, even though the facts over 20 years do not bear this out.

Great job of researching.

Nothing got the Slappies up in arms more the when I interrupted their "We are a top 25 program" blather and pointed out that when you look at the modern era youre quite mediocre.

The Kelly/Jones era was quite brief. The Flynn, Enos, Debord era was much longer and winning seasons were minimal.

My favorite thing is how the WMU wins when CMU was D2 "don't count", but all their D2 wins count in their "top 25 winning percentage" they love to throw around.

Agreed.

In regards to the 'myth of CMU dominating this rivalry', I'd also add how hard it can be to win in Mt Pleasant (not that it's impossible of course!). CMU also had that streak from 06-10, which is embarrassing. I'm sure CMU's MACC also helped create that perception too. So lots of things.
It looks like it's not as bad as it would seem though.

Enos actually was assistant coach here from 2000-02.

We won in '01 and '02, lost in '00.

I always liked him as a QB coach. He was a good recruiter, and had a good eye for QB talent. I like him as a coach. He's a good person. But I don't think he has that personality or the game management skills to be a head coach.

The last five minutes of Saturday's game were very telling. Time was running out and they needed two scores. No hurry up offense, no no-huddle, no sense of urgency. While its easy to second guess, his decisions to punt on 4th and short in WMU territory turned out to bite him in the azz.

Damn, we lost five straight years to CMU? That's b4tch territory. Glad we're off the snide.
