I don't think this team will ever quit (like 2 yrs ago or the bob Polk teams), but I think the over under is about 7 wins and I may be taking the under. Just not enuf offense. Marcus is way off his game tonight. He plays more like Wednesday, whole nutter ball game.

RE: William & Mary game thread
Too little, too late. As hot as Jackson was vs. PV, he was ice cold against both OSU and W&M (and the exhibition against Letourneau, as well). He has to become at least a little more consistent. Second straight strong game by Mency, and good to see Green get into the offensive flow a bit more tonight.

The difference the past 2 minutes down the stretch? For the first time all season we were hitting the open man on fast break. We had 5 assists in the final 2 minutes vs. 9 the other 38 minutes. Third straight game Gercy has had but 2 assists.

W&M makes 1 free throw, but Gearhart fumbles away a pass, and Rice has to foul

Not shocked that as young as we are we would have trouble with a really good passing team with a fairly disciplined offense.
I had company and only caught bits and pieces of the game. Did Davis play??

No (on Davis).

Just got back from the game. I really like Rhoades. Give him time to get the right players in (and also for him to develop as a coach) and he could be a great one for us (I hope).

The effort is there. I do think we need to figure out who to play. If we're playing a smaller team, we're probably better off going small. Seth has really improved but I still think the team's success will hinge upon Marcus. If he is struggling to score, we will struggle on offense too.

Agree with FBO. The team is still learning. Multiple times after a play you could see Rhoades gesturing what he had wanted to happen. The players are thinking about what they need to do at this point and it causes some problems. But then you see what happens in the last few minutes when it comes together.

Until we can go 9 or 10 deep it will be a struggle but I thought Pollard showed some improvement tonight especially moving his feet on defense. Max is just struggling right now as he isn't scoring and his assists are missing at the moment something we need. Tonight it was the man to man that caused us more problems than the zone.

Still it was fun and the rush to the buzzer was great.

How was the crowd, and the student section?

Alright but it's been better. The weather tonight in Houston sucks though (a lot of rain). The crowd was definitely louder than most of the games from the Braun era. 1200 officially so I guess that's probably not 'alright'.

BTW, William & Mary wasn't bad. They didn't have any standout big guys but their whole team seemed like they were 6-3 to 6-6 and could move and shoot a bit. I suspect their talent level is comparable to many conference teams we'll see.

RE: William & Mary game thread
Basically the Rally Club and some others filling about 1/4 of the student section. More non-student attendance than the other night. But everyone into the game even when we were struggling and certainly was louder at the end than it has been in years. I imagine more than a few people stayed at home given the weather.

William and Mary has a mix of veteran and really young players. They do an excellent job of passing and they are more athletic than you would think. There were a couple of drives to the hoop that I didn't think they could put the ball in since they were going so fast. They should have a good year after going 20-12 last season (the previous 3 years they had been under .500). They are one of five D1 schools to never have made the Dance. They play in the Colonial Athletic Assoc along with College of Charleston and James Madison.

Was out tonight so missed the game. Sounds like a teaching/learning experience. Giving Rhoades and players some time--they have to get used to what it takes to win consistently.

Only game 3 in year 1, not game 12 in year 8. Good effort, keep hustling and hanging in there with Rhoades. Go Owls!

They were 8-5 and 6-5 in their non-conference schedules the last couple of years. And they're predicted to probably win the CAA this year and end their NCAA drought (as in - never been there). They made it to the CAA finals last year and lost late.

The CAA isn't what many of us used to remember, but there are some historically decent teams.

On the post-game show, Coach Rhoades said he wanted the Owls to play with the urgency they displayed in the last 5 minutes for all 40 minutes. When they do that, they will win games such as this. Being close is not good enough. They can't be satisfied with being close. They won't be satified with being close.

What's not to like? For the still small numbers, the crowd was loud and into the game, especially the late run. I can only imagine what Tudor could be like with a full house including the student section.

If you have any chance, you need to come see this team and be a part of #RiceRising! chance
