uab womens sports
So in all the discussion, on this board abd in the media, i still have seen very little discussion of the likely impact on womens sports at uab if we drop football. If those 85 mens scholarships go, its very likely that we see a similar loss in the number of female athletes.

Is this not another talking or rallying point for those in our community who care about womens sports? Seems like it would at least be worth a national article.

UA bot in collusion with new uab president kills uab football and slashes womens athletics...in the midst of a $1B fund raising campaign.

Maybe the whole thing is so they don't have to build a bowling alley on campus?

Can't help but wonder how adverse the effect of losing the football team will have on the UAB Softball team?

With no one attending any of the remaining programs with any numbers, the whole thing will collapse & probably in a hurry.

There is no doubt that football is what gives the other sports fuel.

We used to be able to do it with our basketball program but with the importance of football growing everywhere there is no way we could keep up with things without one.

With a football-less program all of the other sports would suffer.

Softball would have to deal with crappy conference. Women's bowling, golf, rifle team, track & field, and sand volleyball all could be on chopping block.

Most women's sports would go away. We'd probably lose Marla Townsend from softball if it drops in conference.

You need a minimum 14 sports to be div1, and at least six of them have to be men's teams. If they drop football, they'll either need to add another men's team, or reclassify down to div2. So, yeah, that would definitely impact women's sports. But, I don't think any of them will be cut if they add another men's team. Just a guess, but with UAB having cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, they're probably triple counting several female athletes (which you are allowed to do) who participate in all three just to even the numbers out as it is.

I don't think that will be the case, as most of these sports don't draw that many people now (with football). Losing football would suck and would cause an initial drop in donations, but I don't see it killing the lesser sports. It will hurt them for a while, but it won't start an athletic death march. MHO

+1 Absolutely little correlation between womens attendance and football. Other than if we actually drop football and have to change leagues "might" have a few less big draw games but in new CUSA I doubt even that. It would however stop the expansion of womens sports that will be soon needed under title IX

You can kiss the marching band goodbye, if that sort of thing matters to you.
