RE: Rice / UTEP post-game thread
So, Old Dominion knocks off Louisiana Tech. Should make for a great game next week. I'm predicting Rice wins, 24-21.[/b]

I thought the same thing. I think one of those should've been defensive interference, but Hamilton initiated contact on at least one of the others. But, what a great couple of catches he had, along with a very solid overall performance. He is an outstanding player.

I thought of you when I saw White got injured - I think you were mercifully spared seeing that. He looked like he was knocked out cold - at least for a moment - when he flew up to make a tackle on a reverse play and looked like he took the impact helmet-to-helmet.
I hope he doesn't have any long-lasting impact from that, but I would not expect to see him next week.

It wasn't helmet to helmet, or it certainly didn't appear to be from the many replays. And he wasn't out cold, as his feet and legs were moving (albeit in pain) as the trainers worked on him. It looked as if it was his shoulder and neck area that took the impact. Might have been a slight concussion, but more likely a bad stinger. He looked conscious and engaged on the sidelines later in the game.
Ricefootballnet-- any info on the injury from the sidelines or in the lockerroom?

RE: Rice / UTEP post-game thread
White has had a series of shoulder injuries, and I believe was wearing a brace for the game. Might have been an aggravation.
With a healthy 6-1 VJ Banks, I was curious why we contined to trot out 5-8 (maybe) Blasingame to cover UTEP's 6-5 Hamilton. It was a comical size mismatch. Blasingame did a commendable job given his disadvantage, but why not use our big corner who has been good all year?

Am I delusional in thinking he spent time on defensive line early in the season? It's taken me this long to realize he shares the #18 with Zach Patt, but I thought Patt was out at the time that I thought Hamilton played DE. I was looking forward to seeing him more as well.

Ok. I think his initial contact was definitely with his shoulder, but their helmets also collided enough that I thought it was a concussion, particularly with how they rolled him over. I initially thought that his shoulder was the issue with the way that he held it, but later thought that he just went limp. I've never liked head injuries and hope that's not the case.

1. up the middle on first downs.
2. unforced errors. I counted 6 illegal motion penalties at key points in the came that could have cost us as many as 14 point.
12 penalties, FOUR defensive offsides in the first half drove me nuts in the stands.
Yeah, frustrating to me also.
Yet, these are uncharacteristic of this team. I guess Showers was doing something on his snap count that was working.
Just out of curiosity, did we have as many defensive offsides in the second half as the first, or did we adjust?
I don't think we had any in the second half. So that's a positive.
Bailiff was pissed as well, and yelling at the players to watch the ball and not bite on the sound.

But I'm not surprised that our coaches stick with Davis given the prevalent conservatism of our offense. He doesn't fumble.
4.1 against 5.2 ypc. The stats page doesn't have a "fumbles-by" listing, but Rice has 3 fumbles lost on 8 total on the year. I wonder if there is a metric by which you'd say you're better off losing X yards per carry to offset Y fumbles lost per 100 carries.

White appeared to be moving around on the sideline and carrying on conversations without any visible distress...but I got the strong impression that he was going right into the concussion testing regimen from the moment he was helped off the field...I need to be careful what I say due to HIPAA/confidentiality issues....

First half they showed DB yelling on the sideline, as I read his lips..."Watch the ball!". I figured that out in 7th grade. It works.

I too saw it on the DVR recording. And here is another interesting tidbit from the broadcast related to the trust coaches have in the players. Apparently there are situations where Coach Thurmond will just call "best" regarding coverage. What that means is that he leaves it to Safties to set the coverage based on what they see. The explanation was that the Rice coaching staff feels that the intellect of their players allows them to run multiple schemes with confidence.

In the homecoming game against UTSA, we committed a dead ball personal foul penalty after stopping UTSA on fourth down with a minute remaining. Bailiff walked out onto the field to meet the player who had committed the penalty, then took him to the back of the bench (by the stands) and 'gave him a talking to' while our offense knelt to run out the clock.
