Not AAC Related: ESPN poll: 8-team playoff favored
Well it looks like the coaches know that the fix is in under the current 4 team playoff model and they are already pushing for the 8 team model and some are even in favor of the 16 team playoff model.

"College football's inaugural four-team playoff is still weeks away, but the FBS head coaches already prefer an eight-team playoff.

Of the coaches who voted in ESPN's weekly poll, 44 percent want an eight-team playoff, compared with 29 percent for the current four-team playoff. Some 17 percent want a 16-team playoff.

Of the 128 FBS coaches, 103 participated in this week's poll... ."

***

"Most of the coaches who want an eight-team playoff believe it should consist of the conference champions from the Power 5 leagues plus the next three highest-ranked at-large teams, or the top-ranked Group of 5 champion and the two highest-ranked at-large teams... ."

8 team playoff is coming, and it's going to sooner rather than later.

IF anybody thinks this is about whats right and getting a true champ you couldnt be more wrong. This is about money and a **** ton of it. The estimates Ive seen for expanding from 4-8 games would include an increase of $250-$350 million extra per year.
Well have a 4 team playoff for a couple years while ESPN builds up a cache of businesses that are willing to pay for sponsorships and advertising. Once they have a proven model at 4 teams and know the income is there, then you will all of a sudden see them reporting about how there is a HUGE demand for an expansion.

My biggest concern is that the G5 is so willing to sit back and take it. For me, I think the AAC and MWC need to unite a bit and make a hard case for being more included in the payout. Lets be honest, there is really 3 levels in college football. Theres the P5, the Next 2 and the Bottom 3.

Expanding the number of Big games isnt tough. There are bowls waiting to move up and with the huge increase they can afford to pay it BUT you have to remember that expanding the playoff means that the Conference specific games (Rose, Sugar and Orange) more then likely get devalued. They no longer are getting the champ and in some cases could be getting the #3 team from the conference. I can see some of those bowl payouts going down. I just cant see ESPN paying $80 million for the Sugar when its the 3rd or 4th best SEC team going against the 3rd best Big 12.
The other option is for those bowls to no longer be conference specific, which means the conferences have to give up a little control which they havent been real keen on doing.

In the end, the AAC and MWC will have a VERY hard time getting into the playoff. UCF was 11-1 and prior to the bowl win they didnt even sniff being in the top 10. I wonder if they were 12- 0 if that would have happened? So our fight has to not be inclusion into the playoff (because theyll give the G5 some nearly impossible token pathway) but instead get both our conferences a decent paying access bowl.

The P5 will more then likely take at least another $150 million from the expanded playoff, which is about another $2 million for them. I say we push for two bowls that pay each conference $24 million (making them the lowest paying of the "Big" bowls) and the rest of the cash goes into the pool for the G5.

That would give the AAC roughly an extra $2 million per team income, along with our $2 million TV contract, along with about $3 million in NCAA credits, $1.5 for playoff and another $1 mill for other bowls/academic incentives etc. $9.5 million isnt great but it would put us WAY ahead of the rest of the G5 and about a third of the way to the lower P5.
